French burqa ban goes into force on Monday
French police will from Monday become the first officers in Europe empowered to intercept Muslim women wearing full-face veils and to threaten them with fines if they refuse to expose their faces.

While some other countries and territories have drawn up bans on the burqa and the niqab, France -- home to Europe's largest Muslim population -- will be the first to risk stirring social tensions by putting one into practice.

We'll see an attempted government overthrow.

I read there are protests in France over this. If they don't like it, they can get the fuck out of France.

When us 'infidels' are in an Islamic state, we have to conform. They need to conform to other countries instead of trying to make every country an Islamic state.

Many supporters of the law have defended it as a measure not designed to harm Islam, but to support a woman's right to walk unveiled, although the text makes it clear that a woman can not choose herself to cover her face in public.

Under a ministerial directive, anyone refusing to lift his or her veil to submit to an identity check can be taken to a police station. There, officers must try to persuade them to remove the garment, and can threaten fines.

A woman who repeatedly insists on appearing veiled in public can be fined 150 euros ($A205) and ordered to attend re-education classes.

This is about the prevention of turning France into an Islamic state.

Since we are on the subject of 'rights': What about the rights of others that visit Muslim countries? There are none for us 'infidels'. I'm pretty certain that because I'm not a Muslim, I'd have to cover my head since I'm a woman. They want rights everywhere else, but will not even grant permission for Christian churches to exist on their land.

Except this ban doesn't only apply to shops and banks, which are private institutions and therefore can enforce their own rules about not allowing bike helmets etc. It applies to any public place.

Would you support American politicians banning people covering their faces in any public place?

Do you want to take a guess at the proportion of Muslim women in France who actually choose to wear the niqab? Because I can guarantee you will vastly overestimate it.

And what sort of argument is 'we can't do it there, so they can't do it here!' anyway? Why don't we ban Muslims from refusing to drink alcohol and eat pork while we're at it?

Hahaha, cognitive dissonance anyone?

‘Belgium’s French-speaking liberals, who proposed the veil law, argued that an inability to identify people who have hidden their faces presents a security risk and that the veil was a “walking prison” for women.

…Wearing the facial veil, known as the niqab, and the body-length outer garment, or burqa, widely worn in Afghanistan, could lead to fines of 15-25 euros (about $20 to $33) and imprisonment for up to seven days.’

All of them? Really? Prove it.

There is a clause in the law banning people from threatening or pressuring women to wear the veil, which is fair enough. why do they have to specifically ban the women from freely choosing to wear it as well?

Yeah, exactly. I hope you realise this law would also prohibit people covering their faces in any anti-government protests, and make them much easier to put on 'watch lists' for later harassment and arrest.

But yeah, it's fine as long as it's only Muslims being affected, right?

So let me get this right.

People that support this cite their perception as Islam being extreme & oppressive & their answer to this is extremism & oppression.

If you support that argument then you're stupid, intolerant & every much an enemy of liberty as you perceive Islam to be.

Is it just me or do other people get tired of the sheer stupidity of fascists & racists?

Love to all. Especially those who want to wear Burqa. I support your right to do so.

If the "letterbox women" don't like it, then as one poster put it, piss off back to where you came from.

It's OK for them (Muslims) to build fu**ing great big Mosques over here in the UK that make our town centres look like disneyland with their great big gold domes, playing stupid wailing sounds every day.

But if we wanted to build a Church over in their country, we would be told very quickly where to shove it! You can't even hold hands with your Wife in a public place over in the Middle East as it's against their laws. So if we don't like it, we don't go on bloody holiday or want to live there!

If they didn't go around dressed like that wearing bombs and blowing up people, then maybe they would get some relaxation on the rules.

Each Country has it's own set of laws and rules and if you don't like it, don't go there, it's basic common sense!
