All our todays elites were elites in Soviet Union as well, there were very few newcomers. Russian Orthodox Church is very weak financially and politically, it can hardly be regarded as "elite". So much is hidden from sight in Eastern Europe that my awareness is increasing with every bit of data. Yes, Hungary has the same problems, with an increasing feeling of collective anger and violence in the air - mostly directed at Gypsies and Jews. However, it is a small country. Though violence was exceptionally bad in our Nazi years, with less than 10 million ppl and all major wars lost in 500 years, modern Hungary is not really dangerous (I wouldn't like to be a Hungarian Gypsy today though). The similarity is that both Hungary and Russia was badly shortchanged in the so-called "system change." There are two elites here fighting each other - the former Party elite (promoting neo-liberalism) and a new nationalistic-fascist one that would prefer to step out of the EU. Years ago I had a frightening vision concerning the far future of Russia (and Ukraine) though. I could not discern what it was though - another Chernobyl, seeds of war or whatever. The fact that Russia is culturally similar to Europe but was perhaps purposefully left out of the EU is also a seed of conflict... How do you see these problems? |
