1. Herodotus was born in Halicarnassus, Greece around 484 BC. Considered the father of Western history, Herodotus is one of the first important figures traveling the known world, methodically recording stories and events. He compiled these records into a book, The Histories.

2. His influence underscores the importance of history, as past actions are the best indicator of future behaviors. The world belongs to a person who has one eye on the past, one eye on the future, and lives in the present. History ranks high among the few qualities a culture needs to survive.

4. The Greek philosopher, Philoloaus, was born 470 BC.

5. Philolaus teaches the universe is comprised of “limiters” and “unlimiteds”. Unlimiteds are abstracts like void, time, dry, wet, earth, dense, and matter. Unlimiteds are beyond human comprehension without limiters. Limiters are terms bounding unlimiteds – such as shapes and numbers. Unlimiteds and limiters are unrelated but connect through harmony. Without this harmony the universe would be incomprehensible to us.

6. The first thing to exist was the hearth. The hearth is both a limiter and an unlimited. Earth revolves around a “central fire”. Philolaus is the first popular figure stating Earth is a revolving planet rather than the universe’s center.

8. Philolaus highlights an important distinction in the history of thought, the distinction between things and their modifying terms, specifically numbers. Consider the word “women” as an unlimited. “Women” could mean any type of women or number of women. Think of “six” as a limiter – “six women” – six limits how many women. Philolaus and many Greek thinkers place great importance on numbers. Modern society would've never evolved without numbers. Language appears mundane until focusing on the mechanics of it, and then we realize it’s a miracle.
