Apart from anything else the ammo has to be stored separately, the gun safe... By the time you had your shit together you'd be dead. |

Can't have any mental health problems, etc. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1373152The cops will also come over and check out your gun storage and stuff after you get it, gotta have it in an approved gun safe and stuff. O.K, I'm willing to do that. I've got kids so I would have anyway. They really come and check? Wow, they aren't kidding are they. you seem to be OK with those strict gun laws. dont buy a gun, you have already lost the battle. maybe buy some cyanide capsules so when TSHTF you and yours can go to sleep and never wake up. |
TeamDub User ID: 1390138 United States 07/01/2011 08:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ideally, you'd start with a decent .22 rifle. Think Ruger 10/22, Marlin, Remington, etc. Familiarize yourself with firearm safety until it's absolutely second nature: 1. All guns are always loaded! 2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy! 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target! 4. Always be sure of your target AND WHAT'S BEHIND IT! Then shoot. A lot. Get proficient with the .22 then start looking into beefier calibers. .300 win mag might be a bit of a leap for a new shooter, .308 is more realistic and will reach out much farther than your skills will most likely allow, and there's a ton of ammunition choices. Most of all - have fun. Shooting is addictive. |

From what I'm told, they're still fairly easy to find in Oz, and fairly easy to find ammo for. I own several myself...they're tackdrivers, but our supply of .303 has mostly dried up. |

Unfortunately this fine gun has been discontinued after a long run.....there are plenty on the used market and other companies make a similar gun....these guns are not flashy but very useful.... |

It is not a light weight, but still a great gun. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. "America is at that awkward stage. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1449970 United States 07/01/2011 08:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Something you should definitely look into is finding an old British 303. Is it the greatest rifle in the world? No. The 308 is superior in most ways. However, considering you are a former British possession, and the .303 was their military rifle for the first part of the 20th century, you may be able to find them cheap as well as surplus ammo. Just a thought. They are a good, reliable bolt action rifle that will kill anything you need it to. If you do go with a shotgun, I would consider a remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Can't go wrong with either really. For self defense scenarios, I would go with this setup: - 12 gauge - 18" Barrel - 8 shot - Get a sling and stock "bra" that can hold shells. If you want to use it for long range shooting, you could also get a rifled barrel as an add on. It will double or triple your effective slug firing range (up to 100M). (Make sure you have the smooth barrel too though - you need that more). As far as ammo, you'll want some of whatever you can get. A mix of bird shot and buck shot is good for self defense. They have new self defense loads available in the us that are slicker than hell - a small slug with 3-6 small shot - best of both worlds. And of course slugs if you can get them (sabo rounds too if you want to distance shoot). |
