I am thinking of moving to a rural property, so I think that I can buy guns much more simply then (not join a gun club).

You could never get away with using a firearm for self defense here.

Apart from anything else the ammo has to be stored separately, the gun safe...

By the time you had your shit together you'd be dead.

I've never owned a rifle before, but I'm thinking about buying one.
Keep in mind that Australia has harsh anti gun laws and I have to buy a gun safe and join a gun club, also it can't be semi automatic.
What would be a good hunting/defence weapon, I'm thinking scoped, but I'm open to suggestions.

.308 bolt action rifle, any make for starters. It is the cheapest big-bang ammo, dependable, and has great knock-down power. Boxes of 20 run as low as $7 here in the US. Other equal calibers run double that, and more.

Or if you can find one, a 7.62x39 or .223 bolt action. Less power, but cheaper ammo. As low as $3/box of 20.

Getting a license isn't that difficult as far as I know, just common sense questions on the test, common sense everywhere else. Can't have any mental health problems, etc.
The cops will also come over and check out your gun storage and stuff after you get it, gotta have it in an approved gun safe and stuff.

O.K, I'm willing to do that. I've got kids so I would have anyway. They really come and check? Wow, they aren't kidding are they.

you seem to be OK with those strict gun laws. dont buy a gun, you have already lost the battle. maybe buy some cyanide capsules so when TSHTF you and yours can go to sleep and never wake up.

Re: I'm thinking about buying a gun.
Ideally, you'd start with a decent .22 rifle. Think Ruger 10/22, Marlin, Remington, etc.

Familiarize yourself with firearm safety until it's absolutely second nature:

1. All guns are always loaded!
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy!
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target!
4. Always be sure of your target AND WHAT'S BEHIND IT!

Then shoot. A lot. Get proficient with the .22 then start looking into beefier calibers. .300 win mag might be a bit of a leap for a new shooter, .308 is more realistic and will reach out much farther than your skills will most likely allow, and there's a ton of ammunition choices.

Most of all - have fun. Shooting is addictive.

If you are thinking bolt action centerfire rifle, I'd suggest a Lithgow SMLE. From what I'm told, they're still fairly easy to find in Oz, and fairly easy to find ammo for.

I own several myself...they're tackdrivers, but our supply of .303 has mostly dried up.

Maybe get a single shot number at first just in case you find you are "meh" about it, would be cheaper.

Re: I'm thinking about buying a gun.
A top choice for harvesting game would be a combination gun.....that's a gun with a rifle caliber and a shotgun all in one.....simple break open action and operation.....it won't scare anti gun governments as it a hunter's tool....

The best of the lot is the Savage arms model 24.....they come in various caliber/ga. combos but the .22lr over 20ga is the handiest....you'll be able to take small game , birds with the .22 and up to deer sized animals with 20 ga. slugs....

Unfortunately this fine gun has been discontinued after a long run.....there are plenty on the used market and other companies make a similar gun....these guns are not flashy but very useful....

If you want a good gun at a reasonable price, the Remington 700 is a great gun. It is not a light weight, but still a great gun.

Re: I'm thinking about buying a gun.
Something you should definitely look into is finding an old British 303. Is it the greatest rifle in the world? No. The 308 is superior in most ways. However, considering you are a former British possession, and the .303 was their military rifle for the first part of the 20th century, you may be able to find them cheap as well as surplus ammo. Just a thought. They are a good, reliable bolt action rifle that will kill anything you need it to.

If you do go with a shotgun, I would consider a remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Can't go wrong with either really. For self defense scenarios, I would go with this setup:

- 12 gauge
- 18" Barrel
- 8 shot
- Get a sling and stock "bra" that can hold shells.

If you want to use it for long range shooting, you could also get a rifled barrel as an add on. It will double or triple your effective slug firing range (up to 100M). (Make sure you have the smooth barrel too though - you need that more).

As far as ammo, you'll want some of whatever you can get. A mix of bird shot and buck shot is good for self defense. They have new self defense loads available in the us that are slicker than hell - a small slug with 3-6 small shot - best of both worlds. And of course slugs if you can get them (sabo rounds too if you want to distance shoot).
