It was worshiped by the Knights Templar, until the Catholic church intervened. The church took this symbol and used it to fuel the crusades and claimed that the evil Arabs worshiped the Baphomet. Much later it was adopted by Satanists as a their symbol manly because it was so feared and hated by the Christians. The picture that we all know as the Baphomet is only a hundred years old, or around that age, and has many influences of cultures and ideals in its design. It original intent was never an intent of evil or the will of Satan. I am thinking of getting a tattoo of it myself, because of the history and multiple meanings it has.

What I've found is that many people who have tatoos aren't aware of their meaning. I've heard people say they wanted a Chinese symbol simply because it "looked cool." This is probably the same deal with this kid. Teens today are de-sensitized to all kinds of evil. He may have even seem Baphomet in a video game or on TV.
