Third generation Cali native here, I remember all those quakes also.. Even 71.. Dang we're old.

I'm a west coast transplanted to the east...been through tons of tremblers, tremors and 2 big quakes.
5.8...peanuts as far as quakes go.
But...this was no normal quake...it felt weird...it was more like a giant vibration. It got to the point where shaking should have started but the vibration just got stronger then stopped.
Granted I live 500 miles or so from the epicenter but I've never felt the ground vibrate the way it did today.

In Christchurch NZ we have had 7.1, 6.3, 6.3, 5.9 and 8000 other EQ's between 3.0 and 5.5.

And we never get a pinned thread, infact if I even post a thread about one the general US reponce is "Wake me up if its over 8.0"

btw i do NOT live in Cali...haven't for 5 1/2 years. Today in AZ it's 116 degrees. pretty hot. it's been as bad as 122 since i've lived here.

anything under 110 is nothing. once the mercury hits 110 it's all the same after that!

like i said, moved out of Cali in '06, to Arizona, will never go back. the state has gone down the shitter. my entire family moved out. too bad, it was a great place to live when i was a kid.

But there is the fact of California being known and somewhat prepared for earthquakes which are "common" there.

East coast rarely gets an earthquake let alone a 6.0. That's pretty freaking scary to us. Most of us have NEVER experienced any thing like it.

Cali doesn't need to worry about hurricanes, just the EQ's. Here in VA, we take on both (well, every hundred years I guess lol.)

lived thru loma prieta and northridge too...saw plenty of crazy stuff. people freaking out and crashing their cars into ditches and eachother... acting like general fools... didn't like the shaking or the aftershocks one bit...slept in my car for a week after northridge...no more cali for me...what a craphole.

however, the folks on the east coast don't have the xperience...cut em some slack. it's a new thing, and one i trust they would rather not get used to.

you really believe it was a 5.9-6.0? how much energy does it take to shake an entire plate twice the size of california? the east coast is 1 plate, the west is many small plates..theres another difference

I rode the Loma Prieta in '89 (Bay Area 7.1 magnitude), as well as others in CA.

From what I've read so far, this quake in VA was only 1/2 mile deep... The depth of the quake makes a difference in the actual shaking/damage on the ground.

yes, this is true...the quake in va was much closer to the surface and so felt worse...also the geological makeup of the east coast is different and a ringing could have been setup by the quake causing it to be felt over a greater area...ya'll take care.

btw...when in so cal for the northridge eq people acted like absolute panicked lemmings, not a shred of common sense to be found (but that's so cal in a nutshell anyway) in my estimation for some first timers the folks on the east coast is doing just fine dealing with a completely new exp.

California never had a "5.9" EQ that shook the entire country, was 1" deep, registered at every seismograph network, and lasted 27 minutes.

This quake was different, it took the entire East coast and shook it around like a cup full of ice cubes.
