Georgia Woman Allegedly Denied Discounts at Store for Being 'Habitual Coupon User'

What are coupons? Are they given to you by the government, or released by the actual shop?

I think those are promotional coupons you can find in some magazines etc. which can offer either some discount or deal like buy one get one free...I often use it myself.

They are coupons you cut out of a newspaper or magazine. The retail store gets reimbursed for the coupon.

the fact that people have to resort to coupons to buy their needs is the problem you should be concentrating on.

I'm tired of people abusing things, because "they can", then we all have to suffer. Fuck her, this time, we all don't lose, just this dumb bitch. BTW i dont use coupons.

Its a manufacturers coupon, the retail store gets the money back, there is nothing wrong with using coupons.

We don't really have anything like that here. We can buy special books - they cost 50 - 100 bucks and you have coupons inside. But they are normally things like save 10% off your meal etc... Nothing for groceries.

Instead, our shops have catalogues they send out to houses, and states things that are on special, or if there is some deal that is 2 for $5. But here there is a limit on the quantity you can buy so people don't abuse it, and everyone get the opportunity to get a bargain. The women in the article was buying 10 body washes. Thats being greedy and ruining it for others.

mixed in with the newspaper and
it usually is about 3-4 pages
of nothing but coupons for
just about anything, food, groceries,
even discounts on services.

This is normal for us every time
the newspaper is delivered.

The point is she had a coupon for each item. The store gets reimbursed the money from the coupon. What is the damn problem here?

Coupons should be honored no matter how many you have. Its a damn coupon issued by the company that creates the products. I don't see a problem here.

Coupons are used by stores to highlight their sale products. So, for example, the regular price for a 12 pack of Coke is, say $3.49 a 12 pack and the store, usually sales it for $5.00. Now, the Coke person comes in and has them buy 30 cases more than they usually do, at a discount, they then have a sale price and then advertise a coupon, in the paper, for, say .50 off. It's the same thing as going to the internet for a book, rather than the book store. These, so called, extreme coupon people are smart as hell and more power to them.

But what about the next customer who misses out, because miss greedy guts has cleaned them out of cheap body wash. It seemed she made a habit of going crazy with the coupons, this would'nt be good for business - because no one else would be able to use there coupons at this store.

These are like 50-cents off a box of Hamburger Helper, which normally costs $1.25 and regularly goes on sale for $1.00. And, some stores will double coupons, so that 50-cent coupon is now worth $1.00. Combine it with a sale for $1.00/box, then it becomes free. People will run in with 100 coupons for 100 boxes of crap food. It's a game that a lot of people play, but for the most part, it's all usually junk food.

Oh I see, so they can be used in conjunction with other coupons. Do they expire?

Most coupons have an expiration date, usually within a 6 month period.

Free market anybody? HELLO! If I get to the store at opening and buy ALL the bread that's on sale with coupons it ought not matter to the store one wit - they got their $. WTF is this? Attempts at getting people used to RATIONING? What's next?

Everything this women buys, is with a coupon only. She is taking advantage of it. I side with Krogers on this.

OK, so according to this store it is bad to be a "habitual coupon user". Yet newspapers and magazines often write about, promote and glorify the practice.

Take USA Weekend for example. USA Weekend is produced by the people at USA Today and is inserted into the weekend editions of the local papers owned by the Gannett chain. On the last weekend of July they featured the cover story "You Can Become a Coupon Queen!" with the subhead "This Mom Saved Thousands of Dollars Last Year. Why Shouldn't You?"

I guess we now know that the answer to "why shouldn't you" is because some store owners and managers are lazy and don't want to turn in the manufacturers' coupons and get reimbursed.

Once again the American public gets conflicting messages.

As long as she wasn't breaking any policies, I don't see why the asshole manager wouldn't take them. And she should have said that.

The report said that she had twenty body washes. If she clipped the coupons from the paper, as she said, then she would not have had enough coupons to cover twenty body washes anyway, so why wouldn't they just take the coupons to cover what she could purchase with them?

There is no way I would have left that store without calling someone over that manager, for some answers.

Usually not; that is, you can't use two different coupons on one item. They usually CAN be combined with in-store sales & discounts, though.

Example:

Coke 12 pack, normally $4.75; use a 50c coupon, pay $4.25

Coke 12 pack, normally $4.75, on sale for $3.95; use a 50c coupon, pay $3.45

But you could NOT use two 50c coupons on one 12 pack and take $1 off.


Oh, and as for expiring, the vast majority of coupons do in fact have an expiration date on them; some -- very few -- plainly state "No Expiration Date". The length of time a coupon is valid varies widely, depending on many factors; in general, though, coupons for food items are good for 1 to 3 months; coupons for non-food items, like household cleaners or laundry soap, are often for 6 months to a year. Of course there are exceptions to this all over the place, but it's a good general guideline.

what happens is people go around taking other peoples fliers, or trying to get multiple copies from other sources, then go to one market, fill up entire carts full of merchandise, take hours in line, and try to leave without spending any money by abusing the coupon system. Not only does this ruin it for any other customer that is in the store to purchase the same product, but it screws up the inventory for the store as well.

This is another example of someone trying to abuse the system and ruin it for the majority of the populace

what the hell do you mean "resort to coupons"???? If you could get your teeth fixed at a cheaper price maybe you would be using them instead of whistling while you talk. You my uk dumbass, have no idea what you are talking about. Coupons are for everyone. There is NO class separation when it comes to trying to save money..."they" put them out there for us to use. I used to use them a lot when my kids where young and I was a stay at home mom with a husband that made plenty of money to provide...that being said, if I could get it cheaper because I cut out a little piece of paper from the ads then so be it.
Unless there is a limit, I don't see a problem. Like the above poster said,what if she has 10 foster kids she is trying to take care of. Who cares why she uses them, it's not illegal, it's just trying to save money.!

Here is the DARN problem..... When I go to the store I would like to have access to the product as well !!! It's not my DAM fault the lady is greedy... I applaude the store for doing this... I honestly think cupons should be totaly OUTLAWED ... It's just a way to screw the guy who does not buy the mail or has a life where he cant set aside a few hours to look over ten tons of junk mail... Everyone should get the SAME price... For gawd sakes we have people getting killed by people trying to push in doors on sale day... This is totaly JACKED !!!!!! We had a storm here a while back. I go to get 1 loaf of bread and it is ALL GONE, at the same time a single woman is in the check out line with a shopping cart of bread.. WTF ..... If you can't see the issue your part of what got us to this sad point in time..

Here is an idea for ya, learn how to make your own bread and you won't have a problem.

The report doesn't say that. It only says she had coupons that she clipped from the paper. Perhaps the manufacturer shouldn't offer the damn coupons if they don't want anyone to actually use them. But the report still doesn't explain their mentioning the woman buying twenty body washes with the coupons. Coupons that are offered in the paper will not cover that many, so if she was trying to use the coupons for SOME of the body washes and according to policy, the store should have allowed her to use them.
