Well, according to Jung and others the REALLY hard part about subconscious maladaptations is uncovering enough of their root cognitive emotional complexes anchored and sustained by a connection facilitated by a memory "forgotten". Once this memory is openly experienced by the conscious, within the context of a way to re-encode it (which occurs every time a memory is recalled, btw, the brain actually has to re-encode the event... the underlying process of which being the basis of directed forgetting and other memory manipulation techniques) in such a way as the more integrated (hopefully...) psyche of the adult individual can recognize it as a distant event with no power, the complex generally starves for want of the emotional energy to feed it.

Many Sufi practices involve diverting this energy through a myriad of formal and informal techniques usually guided by a master teacher and over the course of years of experience in specifically formulated life, which can be a lot more fun than lying on a couch in an analyst's office.
