BREAKING: Turkey, Israel, Greece and Russia mobilising over Cyprus gas
It's on! This will be the next major crisis!

Turkey, Israel, Greece and Russia mobilising over Cyprus gas

Tensions are rising rapidly in the eastern Mediterranean following the discovery of oil and gas around the island of Cyprus, whose northern part is occupied by Turkey. Cyprus and Israel, which recently discovered gas near Lebanese waters, sign a cooperation agreement. As Turkey protests, Russia sends ships on a three-month trip to the area.

Nicosia (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Turkey will continue explorations on the Mediterranean seabed off the coast of the Greek side of Cyprus, an official source said on Monday. The Piri Reis research vessel is equipped for exploration and stopped yesterday at the port of Famagusta for resupply. Diplomatic sources said it left afterwards to continue exploration in the south, contrary to earlier reports that said it was bound for the port of Izmir. The ship has completed its work on Block 12, a zone where Greek Cypriots have begun drilling for oil and natural gas.

Turkey and Turkish Cyprus (which is not recognised internationally) have signed an agreement with regards to the continental shelf to define their maritime borders with the goal of joint gas and oil exploration. However, some of the areas included in the agreement fall within a region claimed by the (Greek) Republic of Cyprus, a European Union member.

Cypriot President Dimitri Christofias said last Saturday that drilling for oil and gas would continue, despite Turkish opposition. For the Cypriot leader, his nation’s right to search for potential mineral deposits inside its exclusive economic zone is non-negotiable and that any foreign meddling is unacceptable.

ANALYSIS-Turkey-Cyprus spat a sign of conflicts to come?

* Cyprus gas exploration fuels regional tensions

* Globally, maritime resource confrontations could rise

* Diplomacy key to avoiding outright conflict

By Peter Apps, Political Risk Correspondent

LONDON, Oct 6 - With an emerging power testing its strength, valuable resources in the balance and a weakened West struggling to exert influence, the dispute between Turkey and Cyprus over gas drilling may be a sign of wider things to come.

In Southeast Asia, the Arctic, and perhaps also Africa and Latin America, disputed maritime boundaries may become flashpoints as rising scarcity of energy and other resources coincide with a shift in the geopolitical balance of power.

The United States and other Western powers, their relative influence waning, may have to play a subtle diplomatic game to ensure conflict is avoided and important relationships are not jeopardised.

"What we're seeing here is theatrics," says Thomas Barnett, US-based chief strategist for political risk consultancy Wikistrat. "The trick here is to manage it."

In the short term, the Cyprus dispute has produced what increasingly looks like one of the most complex naval and political face-offs in the Mediterranean in years.

Western diplomats have watched with alarm as Turkey has sent naval vessels to escort an exploration vessel into waters it believes belong to Turkish-backed northern Cyprus. That move appeared to be a retaliation for drilling by U.S. company Noble Energy in waters internationally recognised as belonging to the Cypriot government.

Re: BREAKING: Turkey, Israel, Greece and Russia mobilising over Cyprus gas
if the Russians get involved they're doing it at the request of Greece and Cyprus government. They don't pussyfoot around, if the Turkey come buzzing around they will get shot down. The Russians also struck deal with Israel over their military advisers in the Georgian conflict, since then they refused to ship Iran the main components of their S300 Anti missile/aircraft system;and they're being sued by Iran fro not doing so.
I don't see the Turks gaining anything from their military theatrics in this conflict, but once involved they'll have much to loose, including their occupied territory in Cyprus; and they go foolhardy into war they'll loose additional territories to Armenia, Greece, and the Kurd's and...wait for it...Iran!. Not much to gain accept Palestinian and Arab sympathies, which doesn't mean a whole lot of beans once their country is divided up between neighbors.
