German satellite enters Earth's atmosphere- most likely Indian Ocean- no solid evidence- experts waiting
A defunct satellite has entered the atmosphere, the German Aerospace Center reported Sunday morning. "There is currently no confirmation if pieces of debris have reached Earth's surface," it said.

Up to 30 pieces of space debris could hit land or water.

Europe, Africa and Australia appeared to be out of the path of the Roentgen Satellite, the agency said late Saturday. It was not immediately clear where the satellite entered the atmosphere.

ROSAT HAS RE-ENTERED: According to Germany's space agency (the DLR), ROSAT re-entered Earth's atmosphere on Oct. 23rd sometime between 1:45 UT and 2:15 UT. So far, no credible sightings of the fireball have been reported, and officials don't know how much debris might have reached the ground. Check the DLR's Facebook page for updates.

During the Entry time frame, the satellite passed over the Indian Ocean and parts of Asia (Myanmar and China). USSTRATCOM estimations indicate an Entry time of 1:50 UTC +/- 7 Minutes. This Entry time would put the satellite in the Indian Ocean away from China. Where exactly the debris hit will be announced later when more data has been analyzed.

But if the timings are correct, any wreckage would probably have dived into the Indian Ocean - although no eyewitness reports have yet come in.

If anything did manage to make landfall, the likely areas to be affected would have been Myanmar and China.

What made the redundant German craft's return interesting was that much more debris was expected to survive all the way to the Earth's surface.

Experts had calculated that perhaps as much as 1.6 tonnes of wreckage - more than half the spacecraft's launch mass - could have riden out the destructive forces of re-entry and hit the planet.

Re: German satellite enters Earth's atmosphere- most likely Indian Ocean- no solid evidence- experts waiting
There was no immediate solid evidence to determine above which continent or country the ROSAT scientific research satellite entered the atmosphere, said Andreas Schuetz, spokesman for the German Aerospace Center.

Experts were waiting for "observations from around the world," he added.

Scientists said hours before the re-entry into the atmosphere that the satellite was not expected to hit over Europe, Africa or Australia. According to a precalculated path it could have been above Asia, possibly China, at the time of its re-entry, but Schuetz said he could not confirm that.

Other reports via Twitter from skywatchers around the world had no sightings of any lit debris falling, or any actual sightings of the satellite passing overhead since 23:30 UTC on Oct. 22. Some news reports say it could have re-entered over China, but it likely didn’t make it as far as Korea or Japan.

Update: US Strategic Command estimates an entry time of 1:50 UTC +/- 7 Minutes. This entry time would put the satellite in the Indian Ocean, and not over China as reported below. The DLR said that after further analysis they should be able to provide more information about exactly where the debris hit.

Heard a 'roar' like a really load truck engine around 6:30pm PDT USA last night.... we looked for a rig on the road going by our house, but nothing. It was dark out, but overcast so didn't see any lights, but really we didn't think to look "up". We are not on any flight paths around this time either. Hummmm, maybe?? Which would make it around northern Idaho to Canada...??

How many "satellites" & cargo have to "fall" into the ocean till the contaminated ocean turns blood red and is toxic?

Thats just it, they were designed to protect us, not myanmar/china. The way that thing was tumbling, no way was any of its equipment or transmitters getting power.

Where the hell is all the tracking hardware that is supposed to have been protecting us from Soviet ICBMs for the last 50 years?

They can't track 1 friggin' satellite with a fixed trajectory and a *transmitter* on it now?

what

I will say this; norad did a craptastic job updating the TLE data during the final day, as in, there was no data for the final day.
