i remember an old article somewhere which interviewed some canadian or alaskan guy whos fulltime job, for decades, was to fly over the north pole region to exact the magnetic north pole. i found that strange because planes and sattellites aren't allowed to go there because of magnetic disturbance of instruments, and risk of malfunction. hard to pinpoint the magnetic north pole when sensitive equipment fails?
