Just asked my father and apparently we had CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera. All foreigners were given apartments in one of two buildings that were next to each other. The buildings were inside a massive plot of land that had a park with a decent play area for us kids. Swings, slides, monkey bars and all. We never mingled with locals outside school and the state assigned a domestic worker for each apartment. BTW I never mentioned this was during the reign of Kim Il Sung. The people there genuinely loved their leader. |

Were the other students children of important people and if so did they have food? Did you ever see someone snatched off the street or a train and disappeared? What did you and your family do for fun? No TV No radio etc. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 7796859 South Africa 12/27/2011 01:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Like I said in my previous post, all foreigners were given residence in one area as far as I can remember and we never mingled or saw any locals other than the kids and our teachers in school. At the Embassies and residences there were domestic workers that were assigned by the state for each mission and their residence. Very friendly people we never had problems with them. |

Most if not all foreigners in that country are representatives of their countries in North Korea. We all had food but I remember my dad used to make a trips to china almost every 2 months by train to get supplies of other stuff that were not available. The train was awesome, my brother and me would go knocking on the different cabins sing in Korean to the locals on the train and they would fall in love with us and give us treats. No. There was TV we had a satellite that picked up foreign channels. |

It was brilliant, the whole school would be turned into a day of games, fun and competitions. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7796859 The day usually started off with every single class lining up in an assembly hall where the whole school sang Happy birthday to the "Dear leader". Then each class beginning from the smallest would go up in a single file and each student was given a shoe-box sized box filled candy, stationary, toys and other little goodies. Once this was over we all went outside and the games would begin. Really fun obstacle races, tug of war and these sort of competitions. If you or your team won you would win prizes like more candy and other goodies. I only have good memories of the place. It was so safe I used to walk back home with my brother who was one year older and I was only 5 at the time. I don't remember seeing many cars on the roads, in fact they were extremely rare. For this reason we used to go skateboard down a steep downhill slope which was a well maintained main road, and to this day I have scars on my knees from the falls. If you are wondering how I went to school there, my father served on a diplomatic mission, Im not gonna get into more details. If you want to know more about North Korea then I will answer your questions. Dont eat as well there Did the kids have enough energy to play? |

Taekwondo as you aged. I never got to the taekwondo level though.... I posted this in hopes of helping shed some light and understanding from a different perspective on North Korea, first hand experience from someone who lived there, seems like most of you are happy with accepting the media fabricated version of life in the North. I am only grateful for the experience because whenever North Korea is mentioned in the news I know most of it is not true having lived there. For example the videos with North Koreans crying over their leader I know for a fact they genuinely love him, when almost everyone claims its fake and they are being forced. You cant force tears. |

Life was restricted for the locals they were not allowed where we were. we had unrestricted access to go anywhere since our country is considered to be friendly. We used to go on a lot of road trips to other towns. I will never forget the beautiful towns on the mountains. I live in south africa now and guess what the people here have so called freedom but everyone loss depressed and unhappy you can see it in peoples faces. I cannot say the same about the koreans they looked genuinely happy like they lived a fulfilling and meaningful life. |

Finally some one who thinks for themselves! Yes we were free to move about, sometimes we would stop to ask a local for help and some would run away, they were not allowed to interact with foreigners our were too afraid. others did not seem to have that issue. The school I went to was a local school everything was in korean there are no privileged schools for the elite. I had to sing the same songs about how great their leader is just like the other korean kids. Yes we had to stuff like this almost regularly. |
