HELP - toilet water in 2 toilets mysteriously low
I have two toilets on opposite sides of a wall (one in master bedroom, one in main house bathroom). I also had a slow draining tub in the main bathroom. I used a wet/dry vac on the drain in the tub - both sucking and blowing to get any hair clogs out.

That solved the tub's slow drain. But now ever since I did that the two toilets have very low water levels and they "gurgle" when you flush them.

I thought maybe the plumping vent pipe on room was clogged. I heard squirrels can clog it with acorns. I went on room and stuck an 11' pole down, but didn't feel anything. Obviously would need something longer or run water down it to more fully test it.

Do you guys think it's the plumbing vent pipe clogged or was it the sucking/blowing action of the wet/dry vac that perhaps screwed up the pressure or maybe even sucked in material that was partially clogging the vent pipe - causing a worst clog.

trying to avoid calling the plumber if I can. Both toilets work, but taking a dump with little water requires cleaning the bowl which is a PITA.

p.s. the ballasts inside each toilet is already set so the water level is at its maximum height inside the toilet tank.

p.s.s. Could sucking/blowing have messed up the wax seals on the toilets? Doubt the wet/dry vac is that strong though.

i'm thinking you've created an air pocket somewhere in your system, and that's fucking things up for you

i'm no expert, but i'd have a go at trying to blow through the drain on your tub again.

worth a try?

Typo on my part:
>I thought maybe the plumping vent pipe on room was clogged

should be:
>I thought maybe the plumping vent pipe on ROOF was clogged

The plumbing vent pipe is supposed to provide enough pressure to keep septic gases from backing up into your house.

Oddly enough, the toilet downstairs, which is closest to the septic (30' away with small decline angle in pipe) doesn't have any problems flushing.

Hmmm. That is worth a shot. Though I wonder if I'd be better off sucking the tub drain rather than blowing. If indeed an air pocket, blowing would just add more air. though, who knows.

guess I could try both methods, flush, then retry with opposite vacuum mode.

It would really suck to have a plumber come here, spend 5 minutes fixing it, and then charge me $80 for something asd simple as blowing (or sucking) through tub drain.

You posted on a conspiracy site, so here is your answer.

There is a UFO mothership cloaked right above your house which has caused your immediate, surrounding barometric pressure to drop to such levels that your toilet dont work..

Solution, put on a tin foil hat, go out side, shoot your 22 in the air directly above your house.. That should get the mothership to move.

Don't ask me to explain why, but I have found that when the drain pipe is nearly stopped up, it will siphon the water in the toilet until the siphon breaks. So, I'm going to say it's the drain pipe, and not the vent pipe or the toilet.

Try this. Squirt a load of dawn detergent into the toilet bowl(and stir it up) and flush it, do this several times and see if you can wash away the obstruction in the pipe. If it's really in the pipe, don't go crazy with a plunger or you will blow out the toilet seal and then your toilet will leak on the floor.

it sounds like the flapper in the tank is not staying up long enough to let enough water to flow to the bowl to give you a good flush -look at the flapper when you flush the handle

this is in your upstairs bathrooms? then it is a preasure issue
the dawn dish soap this poster sugested is a great idea
add it to the toilets, flush, then wait around 1 hr, then flush again
try this a few times to see if it works
if it does not, go buy some Coca Cola and before you go to sleep tonight, add 1 can to each toilet in your house and flush once, then add 1 can to all of your other drains (both upstairs and downstairs, sinks, bathtubs etc.) and do not run any water in them after you add the cola.
let that sit over night while you sleep
when you wake up in the morning, 1st thing, run pure hot water in your sinks and tub for 3-5 min, and then after you have done this, flush your toilets a few times
i use to re do rentals and we always had drain issues. we used this method all the time and had great suscess with it

This is it! I had the same. Your system can not suck air in so it tries to suck from anywhere else. This makes the noise as you flush your toilet, and this sucks the water away. You will have a congestion if you don't fix this soon, because the "things" will slow down in the pipe and eventually a plug (congestion) will start to build up in some horizontal pipe.

I flushed my eyeglasses down the toilet 4 days ago.

Goodbye glasses.

Then the toilet was flushing slowly.

Landlord took the toilet apart, found my glasses, put in a new wax seal and it's working fine.

Haven't worn the glasses yet.

Gross.

Re: HELP - toilet water in 2 toilets mysteriously low
Just remember one thing about your drains in your house..

You can Blow a seal in the lines with too much pressure !

This is a bad Idea as you can Blow something deep in the drain line Thread: New way to plunge your toilet! Funny as sh*t LOL!

Also remember that older built homes with metal pipes ( instead of ABS ) will corrode over time. If you want to try the Acid way be careful that your not eating away at some of the "build" up that can actually Help seal the pipes.

If your using more then a simple "plunger" then you should reconsider using a certified plumber. One hour ( yes I know 100 bucks an hour ) can save you thousands of dollars.

I have layed down many of waste pipe before the Slab was poured and can tell ya .. you dont want to blow up a fitting that may or may not have been Glued correctly.

I would suggest that you get gallons and gallons of water and keep filling up your bowl ( it should self drain/flush ).

If it starts to overflow then you have a clog in the pipe.

If it flushes but back burps .. you may have a hole in the pipe system.

Remember when you do a self pour flush .. the Bowl will NOT fill to the regular level .. it will be almost empty. Just fill the bowl up to the correct level, flush the tank as normal and see what happens.

Get back to us on this.. ( bookmarked )

Wow! I know this isn't related, but it's amazing the feedback given for this interesting problem of OP's.

Kind of makes sense that possible explantions for such odd plumbing problems would be found on this site.

As a side note, we had these stupid ass automatic flush toilets at work. Don't even think of installing such insanity! So far they have consumed keys, wallets, badges, cell phones, and who knows what else.

They are like traps. If anything falls in them and you reach or move to recover the item it will automatically flush! Toilets from hell.

I'm sorry OP I can't offer any other solutions. I think you have a lot of sound advice from many people who have faced plumbing problems.

I'm with the guy above suggesting you pour lots of water down the toilets. get a couple of 5 gallon pails full and then pour them right down each one. if there's a clog, that's probably going to get at it, if it can be moved by water.

don't know about the air bubble theory, but this should also "reset" the pipe below, if you follow me.

Check your local hardware store for a line blow out tool..Made of hard rubber that you attach to a garden hose and feed into the line from your house to the septic tank.

Once inside the line as far as you can go, you turn on the water, tool expands and seals the line and then squirts pressured water to clear the line.

Run water for 1 to 2 minutes, turn off and see if it gurgles and clears, if not feed more line as far as you can and repeat until it does clear.

Use rubber gloves and then a bleach solution to clean the hose and tool.

Has saved me a half dozen times from line clogs.

Not the thing to do with a full septic tank..

Tool Cost me $25, 10 yrs ago..Be sure to get the right size(bigger) for the septic line.

I did this first thing on Christmas morning with a house full of company who used wipes and clogged the line.

Good luck...great tool if you aren't squeamish.
