Why are cable companies allowed to create monopolies?

Because the truck and feeder cable systems are very expensive to install, so you usually only have one set of those systems in place. If say comcast owns the lines, if another cable company wanted to come in, they would have to build a new system around the comcast lines. Most companies aren't willing to shell out the big bucks to install those lines.

These companies such as comcast and TWC will come in and buy out the existing cable systems, therefore pushing out the competitors and taking over their cable systems.

Ya it sucks and the corruption runs even deeper than you think. TWC and Comcast are silent partners. All cable companies lead back to one main source.

What to do about monopolies is I think one of the most important political and economic question of our time. If we don't want to be ruled by a few of them that is.

After researching it more. Yep you are right, all about the politicians getting kickbacks to keep the monopoly going, and when the rates go higher for us customers, the govt makes more on taxes. Screw politicians, they are nothing but scammers. The old system is about to collapse, it can't come soon enough.

as a utility they are managed differently.

its not in the best interest of the general public to have dozens of different cable companies and associated hardware clogging up the city. so you can get the playboy channel for a cheaper price.

try a satellite company instead...they exist, making it an oligopoly, not a monopoly.

you could steal the service...just bribe the installation tech.

if you get caught however, you go to jail maybe.

They haven't been sued yet by an attorney general to force a breakup.
