At some point during the course of the trial, 71 percent of participants responded to ketamine and 6 percent responded to placebo. "These findings are particularly noteworthy because a substantial proportion of study participants had been prescribed complex polypharmacy regimens in the past with substantial treatment failures," the authors write. "The mean [average] number of past antidepressant trials was seven, and more than 55 percent of participants failed to respond to electroconvulsive therapy. The toll of this protracted and refractory illness on the subjects was evident, in that two-thirds of participants were on psychiatric disability and nearly all were unemployed." No serious adverse effects were reported during the study. The results lend support to the hypothesis that the glutamatergic system is implicated in the development of bipolar disorder, and that targeting it may lead to improved therapies. "Future research will need to address whether differences in kinetics associated with intravenous administration -- which allows for faster absorption and avoids hepatic metabolism -- are important or necessary for rapid antidepressant effects to occur," the authors write. "Ketamine produces a very sharp increase that immediately relieves depression," said Dr. Lisa Monteggia, associate professor of psychiatry at UT Southwestern and senior author of the study published June 15 in Nature. Typical antidepressant medications -- one of the most widely prescribed classes of drugs in the U.S. each year -- often take several weeks to relieve symptoms of depression. If they are not successful within 12 weeks, physicians must prescribe a different antidepressant to produce a response. [link to www.sciencedaily.com] |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1313099 United States 02/02/2012 08:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ketamine: Quick Fix for Severe Depression? Researchers at the Neuro Psychiatric Center next to Ben Taub General Hospital are testing one infusion of ketamine for its short-term effects in treating depression. If the study’s results are successful, a second study will administer ketamine three times a week to patients to test the drug’s long-term effects. “This is supposed to help for a couple months. The study is still under way, so it’s hard for us to know now how long the effects will last. Will it cure depression for a year or longer? I don’t think so. But we’re hoping it will work for a few months in the second trial,” said Dr. Asim Shah, who directs the mood disorder program at Ben Taub General Hospital. Shah said so far the results are promising, but using ketamine to treat depression is not yet FDA approved. Anti-depressants like Prozac or Celexa usually take at least a few weeks to start working. During that time, patients are more susceptible to suicide. [link to abcnews.go.com] |

Quoting: where's my stapler i know ive had got it and neerly on the way to curing it ... No its not that is religious bullshit. It is nearly always a spiritual issue, but sometimes a nutritional or body chemical issue. So what the cure of your personal spiritual "demons"? there are some people who are skilled in black magic that can send you some awful thought forms, but again in that case, your spiritual Knowledge of such and how to deal with it, is still your issue. |
