Between January 20th and 22nd, light grey ash emissions, 200 metres high, occurred at irregular intervals; the colour of the plumes suggested mostly water vapour with low ash content.
Activity increased on January 21st and 22nd with more frequent ash emissions occurring over extended periods. As I put it in my note, flights to Tokua airport were cancelled on January 21st.
Emissions subsided in the afternoon of January 22nd but small-to-moderate explosions continued. A large explosion at 21:47 ejected incandescent fragments, and produced an ash plume that rose up to 2 km. Explosions were heard through the night.

The Darwin VAAC has yet again reported an ash plume at Karkar, Papua New Guinea. I don't think this is a new eruption, because Karkar seems to get quite a few misidentified 'ash plumes'

...A new element in the eruptive episode of 28 January 2013 is the Strombolian activity at the NSEC, which accompanied during the first two-and-a-half hours of the episode the Strombolian activity within the Bocca Nuova.
This is indeed the first occurrence of simultaneous eruptive activity at two of Etna's summit craters since about 12 years; in contrast, during the period of summit activity of 1995-2001, it was rather normal to see contemporaneous activity at two, sometimes three and rarely all four of the summit craters. One particularly noteworthy event of this type was the sequence of paroxysmal episodes that occurred within a few hours on 4 September 1999: first a sub-Plinian explosive episode at the Voragine, followed by lava fountaining within the Bocca Nuova, and finally an episode of Strombolian activity at the (old) Southeast Crater, which culminated in the fracturing of its cone from the summit to the base.

confirms that the lake within the crater has now dried out and a small tuff cone has started to form on the former floor of the lake. The active vent continues to produce vigorous bursts of mud, rock, steam and gas 50-100 metres high. It seems ash is not being carried into the plume...

...Larger explosions of mud, rock and perhaps molten sulphur are always possible and occur with little or no warning. A greater than usual hazard does exist for visitors to the island as a result of the current level of volcanic activity...

...Now, a few things to note here. First, the lava flow has a bit of a crust where they are sampling, so the it is cooler and thus the viscosity is higher. However, it can’t be too high as you can see the lava flowing rather quickly as it reaches the corner past our intrepid sampler. Second, the lava must have some yield strength because when the sample breaks free, it doesn’t completely ooze like caramel when it is hot, but rather snaps off. Third, after the sample is taken, the lava doesn’t instantly flatten out on the flow — it stays up as a semi-rigid spire for at least until the video ends ~10 seconds later. All of this vividly shows how lava, even flowing lava, is actually a strong substance, behaving as a plastic, more than a liquid as is imagined a lot of the time.

...Yesterday’s earthquake swarm at Colima volcano (Mexico) culminated in explosive activity overnight (and continuing). A relatively large explosion occurred just before 4 am local time today (large “green” event) and another smaller eruption occurred shortly after 6 am today (“red” event)...

...Given that the activity does not appear to be correlative (although station CO1V does show some local seismic activity) on other Cotopaxi seismometers (station CO1V), and EPN has not commented on the activity (which at Cotopaxi would be a cause for great concern!), I am of the opinion that an electronic connection has been cross-wired somewhere and what VC1 is actually showing is seismic activity at Reventador volcano, as this is the sole Ecuadoran volcano currently displaying this level of volcanic activity...

...this evening we've had the fifth eruptive episode at Etna's Bocca Nuova within the past 3 weeks (in the same interval we also had two episodes of Strombolian activity at the New Southeast Crater), so this is actually the most frantic interval of volcanic activity at Etna in a while.

If it really fills up that whole huge thing (which still would require quite a volume of new erupted material), it would lead to overflows as it did in October-November 1999, which to me was the most beautiful eruption I have seen at Etna in neary 25 years. Majestic, and totally harmless.

Volcanic Alert Bulletin WI-2013/07 - White Island Volcano
Data from a gas-measuring flight undertaken yesterday at White Island by GNS scientists shows that levels of volcanic gases emitted from the volcano are slightly higher than the levels measured last week. Overnight, the seismic activity has reverted to a continuous tremor and remains at a high level.

Volcano Technician Karen Britten said that although there appeared to be a muddy lake around the active vent, the area looked quite dry. During yesterday’s flight she saw many explosions from the vent, but they were “not as visually spectacular” as those she observed last Friday.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas flux has increased from 1,800 to 2,000 tons per day, sulphur dioxide (SO2) flux from 366 to 600 tons per day and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) flux is now 19 tons per day (previously, 15 tons/day)...

Russian scientists voice concerns about dangers of a supervolcano erupting in Italy

January 31, 2013 – ITALY – It looks like we may be in for an earth-shattering explosion. A dormant super volcano appears to be stirring under the Phlegraen Fields of Naples in Italy. Rising soil temperatures and surface deformation in the area have alarmed seismologists. In the distant past, volcanic super eruptions caused global climate change responsible for mass extinctions of plant and animal species. So far, scientists are unable to model the potential consequences of an awakening supervolcano. Latest studies show that the Phlegraen Fields have actually been swelling above sea level at a rate of 3 cm per month. Micro quakes and large amounts of gases accumulated in soil indicate that the volcano may be preparing to erupt, says Vladimir Kiryanov, Assistant Professor of Geology at the St. Petersburg University. “The Phlegraen Fields is a supervolcano. Yellowstone in the United States and Toba in Indonesia are also supervolcanoes capable of spewing more than 1,000 cubic km of magma. These are catastrophic eruptions. There was a huge volcanic eruption in the Phlegraen Fields some 30,000-40,000 years ago. Volcanic ash from that eruption is still found in the Mediterranean, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and even in Russia. We are now seeing the expansion of a magma pocket, which means that there might be an eruption at a certain time.” Super eruptions of such magnitude may produce the so-called “volcanic winter” effect when sulfur gases and ash will reach the stratosphere and cover the globe with thick ash clouds that solar rays will be unable to penetrate. Condensed sulfur trioxides will react with moisture, forming sulfuric acid. Downpours of sulfuric acid will hit the Earth. Scientists have obtained new evidence of a similar cataclysm following the eruption of the Toba super volcano on island of Sumatra in Indonesia about 74,000 years ago. But today, things promise to be even more devastating. Suffice it to recall the havoc wreaked by a minor increase in volcanic activity in Iceland in 2010 on air transportation over Europe. Super eruptions occurred so rarely that it is virtually impossible to calculate the approximate time span between the first and last stages of a future potential eruption. In the 1970s, the Phlegraen Fields inflated by more than 50 cm. There were even cracks in house walls. But then the process slackened. Apparently, the fact itself that a magma chamber is being filled with magma may or may not signal any immediate eruption. Alexei Sobisevich, laboratory chief at the Institute of Volcanology and Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, shares his view: “It actually seems to be a long-term precursor. A magma chamber may be filled up within a span ranging from decades to centuries. Many mounts grow by 5 cm per year. This is a natural process.” Some scientists hold that the volcanic system of the Earth is becoming increasingly tense and that underground cavities are full of magma, threatening to burst out any moment. January 31, 2013 – INDONESIA - Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, erupted twice throughout Thursday (31/01/2013) afternoon. Head Volcano Observation Post Lokon and Mahawu, Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Bandung Geological Agency, Ruskanda Farid Bina, said the first explosion occurred at 6:54 pm and was followed by a second explosion at 10:44 pm, and that was followed by a boom that sounded up to the settlements located around the crater. “We could not observe the height of the eruption of dust because of the condition of the fog around the crater. At first eruption eruption dust altitude of about eight hundred yards,” said Farid. ...A vigorous burst of seismicity occurred overnight beneath the Southern Moat of Long Valley Caldera (CA) (station MMS). An episode of inflation at the caldera ended late last fall. Earthquakes also cluster beneath Mammoth Mountain volcano, and along a NNE-trending structure within the Sierra Nevada Mountains south of the caldera.
