Feb. 7, 2013 – A University of Utah seismologist analyzed seismic waves that bombarded Earth’s core, and believes he got a look at the earliest roots of Earth’s most cataclysmic kind of volcanic eruption. But don’t worry. He says it won’t happen for perhaps 200 million years.

“What we may be detecting is the start of one of these large eruptive events that – if it ever happens – could cause very massive destruction on Earth,” says seismologist Michael Thorne, the study’s principal author and an assistant professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Utah...
“My study might be the first to show actual seismic evidence that the piles are moving,” he says. “People who have done previous simulations have suggested this. They are sitting atop the core and getting pushed around by overlying mantle forces like subduction. They move around on the core somewhat like continental plates drift at Earth’s surface.”
Thorne says the merging LLSVP piles are each about 1,800 miles diameter, forming a single pile some 3,600 miles wide from east to west and stretching across Earth’s core beneath an area from Australia almost to South America. Two blobs, or ULVZs, on the piles’ edges merged to form a new blob that is perhaps 6 to 10 miles thick and covers an area about 500 miles long and 150 miles wide, about the area of Florida or “eight to 10 times larger than any ULVZs we observed before,” Thorne says...

the ONLY explanation I think is these calderas are weak spots in the crust, and any MASSIVE upward movement of the mantle plume head upwards would FIRST be taken up by these weak areas, a bit like wrinkles on the surface of a balloon smoothing out as you pump more air in.

i seem to remember (about 6 months back) jon saying that he not seen any activity in this region since he could remember -i think that was refering to activity near the dorment(?) bardabunga volcano (the one that everyones forgot!)

This phenomenon, known as a “sudden stratospheric warming event,” started on Jan. 6, but is something that is just beginning to have an effect on weather patterns across North America and Europe. While the physics behind sudden stratospheric warming events are complicated, their implications are not: such events are often harbingers of colder weather in North America and Eurasia. The ongoing event favors colder and possibly stormier weather for as long as four to eight weeks after the event, meaning that after a mild start to the winter, the rest of this month and February could bring the coldest weather of the winter season to parts of the U.S., along with a heightened chance of snow.


THAT is what is happening. All the eruptions we have seen have had a cumulative effect, and have pumped a hell of a lot of s02 into the stratosphere, bit by bit. Now, we are EXPECTING a big eruption, at Katla, at Hekla, and there are other volcanoes around the world on the brink as well. All they will do, is make an already bad situation much MUCH worse.

These earthquakes have been occurring now for a couple of weeks. It is the first time since Eyjafjallajokull that the area experiences more than ocasional deep earthquakes, and one of them today was a 2.6 (although with a poor quality). i don't know why the doubt. the SSWs are OBVIOUSLY caused by volcanoes, all the eruptions we have had this past few years.

all we need now is one large vei6 eruption, and we'll be plunged into a mini ice age at least. if a mid size vei7 eruption happens we will be in a LOT of trouble.

remember, whenever they say a 'strange warming of the stratosphere', they know exactly what is going on. they KNOW!

I think it's the fact that Icelandic volcanoes are erupting that is causing the big problem, being so close to the north pole. Ejaf erupted, then, if you remember, 8 months later in November 2010 we had a very strange extreme cold snap, caused by 'unusual' Sudden Stratospheric Warming

now we are in another 'unusual' Sudden Stratospheric Warming' episode, 19 months after a large eruption at Grimsvotn

there's a lag between eruptions and the extreme warming of the upper atmosphere. I think the s02 gets into the high atmosphere above the Arctic then takes a while to warm up enough to cause the problems we are seeing now. These are still small amounts of s02 though, but they are causing huge problems as the storms hammering the USA at the moment show,

Now imagine twice as much s02, or ten times as much.

this is only the start. the Katla eruption WILL happen, and maybe a Hekla eruption as well, and it/they WILL cause massive problems, but maybe not immediately. remember, there'll be a lag of a few months before it gets going.
