When the New Southeast Crater at the summit of Etna wakes up after having been asleep for some time, there is always a good chance that this renewed activity will soon evolve into another one of those amazing "paroxysms", short and extremely intense episodes of high lava fountaining, ash emission, and generation of lava flows. So that's what many of us expected to see when the crater reactivated on the late afternoon of 15 March 2013 after nearly 10 days of quiescence - but this time, the buildup to the paroxysm was quite slow - it took more than 24 hours, before the paroxysm finally came.
Not only did the volcano tease us, also the weather looked like it was not exactly willing to collaborate - clouds covered the volcano most of the day on 16 March, while the bangs from the explosions rattled our windows every few seconds. I noted, though, that on the southwestern side, there seemed to be an open corridor in the clouds, so maybe from that side one would see the activity, and in the afternoon I drove up the mountain to a place known as Piano Vetore hoping to get a view of the action...

There is little to ninhotg happening in Iceland. I have also been moving from Iceland to Denmark (that has taken a lot of time and work. It also seems that I am going to move again within Denmark soon, when I am not sure yet). But I do update regularly. But unlike many other blogs. I do appear to have serious effect based on what I write (from what I hear). So I have to be careful what I write and how I write it.As for in-depth details. It sometimes is just like that details are often lacking from the data that I get. For instance, the earthquake swarm at Herf0ubreif0 was just a earthquake swarm. Nothing more, ninhotg less. So while quit times are up on us in Iceland I do my best to find stuff to write about. But that is far from easy to do.But when something happens. I write about it, in as much details that I can do.

as for swarm near Prestahnukur, not 100% but almost sure that eruption there in the near future is highly unlikely, probably just so nothing here about it and did not write

The 140 sq km Auckland volcanic field, which is a late Pleistocene to late Holocene in age, lies at the southern end of the Northland Peninsula and is overlain by New Zealand's largest city. More than 50 maars, tuff rings, small lava shields, and scoria cones have formed in the past 140,000 years in an elliptical volcanic field 29 km long in its largest (N-S) direction. The Auckland volcanic field has dominantly produced intraplate alkali basaltic to basantic rocks forming the northernmost of a group of Quaternary volcanic fields of the Auckland Intraplate Province. Of the 19 eruptions known to have occurred within the past 20,000 years, only one eruptive center is known to have been active during the Holocene (Smith and Allen, 1993). The Rangitoto eruption, about 600 years ago, was the largest of the Auckland volcanic field and created the 6-km-wide Rangitoto Island, which consists of multiple scoria cones up to 260-m high that cap a low shield volcano with a broad apron of lava flows.

Intensification of the eruptive activity of the Tungurahua Volcano in afternoon
March 16, 2013
The activity in the Tungurahua increased substantially today starting at 17h55 (local time) with the generation of a column of ash and gases, the same as was raised to about 4 km above the crater and headed south -West. Subsequently intensified and prolonged bellowing detonations, and observed lava fountains rising approximately 200-300 meters above the crater. Washed sources are incandescent material constants emissions in the crater area...
So far we have seen lava fountains persistent (sustained and strong strombolian activity, and then pulsed), pyroclastic flows down the creek Mandur-until the middle of the flank of the volcano (much higher inhabited sites). There are reports of ash falling in the towns of El Manzano, Palitagua and Chogluntus. There is also a report of material rolling in the upper headwaters of the Rio Ulba...

now you CAN see the lights over katla, so if we can see these lights from cameras pointing both south and north, that means the lights are BETWEEN the cameras?

is there some sort of electrical phenomena going on here with the volcanoes?

Renewed activity at El Hierro

VC-commenters arjanmm and Alison noted at 14:54 and 14:59 UTC today that some tremor was going on at our famous Canarian friend El Hierro. A clear rise in tremor, combined with several earthquakes were seen at the seismic stations on El Hierro, most notably on the CHIE-station.
