I haven't seen any reports of this, but it's happening here in Southeastern Virginia. Guys with siphon pumps, going around in the middle of the night, siphoning gasoline from trucks.

Why isn't the media reporting on this? And is it happening in your neck of the woods?

What area are you in? Here in Hampton Roads (Virginia), we're having this happen in "nice" neighborhoods. Gas is pushing $4 a gallon here.

Last time gas was over $4 a gallon here in Houston there was a lot of people that had their cars hit by someone going around with a cordless drill.

Yahoo had a video on gas theft a couple of days ago: [link to gma.yahoo.com] I like the part at the end of the video, where they recommend a $15 locking gas cap, because, you know, people that steal gas won't just spend $15 on the off chance the car they were planning to siphon gas from has a locking gas cap on it.

I'm across the border in NC...they just steal the whole car! I'm sure with gas prices on the rise it will be here in no time. Be sure to lock your car up although they could puncture the tank and drain it that way too! Lock and load!hunter

Whoever drills a gas tank for maybe $40 - 50 on average, is an unbelievably massive POS.

This is also happening in the U.K. My car was emptied by thieves last week, not to mention the damage to my car caused by bending the cover out.

I wish they made METAL locking gas caps (only metal ones available are for older vehicles) instead of plastic that you can just pry off...

Seems to me, if you've got a 20-gallon tank on your truck or van, that's like a $100 bill just sitting in the driveway.
