Wisconsin Booms Explained???

Good morning all. They mine as well of said it was lens flare, reflecting off of swamp gas! What BS.

Montello resident here. The boom that was heard in our small town was suspiciously close to our old granite quarry. Residents who I know that live on top of or very near that quarry were the ones who heard the underground boom. "Sounded like pipes breaking" or "underground sonic boom" were a couple of the descriptions. A news report featured on our local affiliate WISC (CBS) [link to www.channel3000.com] showed reports from the school which is built very near (School) and over (baseball diamond) deep veins of the granite.

This is the most probable and easy to understand explanation I've read.

Throughout much of the central United States, younger sedimentary rocks conceal the craton. However, in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and several other states it is well exposed. Likewise, micro-quakes such as the ones reported in WI are common place along the craton.

When the WI Geologist states he has run out of ways to say "I Don't Know." That is because this part of WI is one of the geologic areas which has a relatively minor layer of sedimentary materials distributed over the craton granite which fractures due to any number of natural geophysical processes and reasons. Thus when these processes happens, noises and ground vibrations related to those process are heard and felt as there is not a large, heavy distribution of sedimentary materials to absorb those sound waves and vibrations.

Whenever there is a shift in sedimentary distribution, underground water table, or any of the hundreds of other localized natural geophysical phenomena which causes craton granite to fracture: The pops/booms/noises are not normally heard or felt as frequently in other areas of the craton due to the far larger and thicker layers of sedimentary materials covering it in those other geographic regions. These same sedimentary materials act as an acoustic cushion which absorbs/silences the sounds/vibrations much like a typical household pillow does when you scream into it.

This is a common geologic phenomenon and happens far more often than the general public thinks or realizes.
