Brisbane opens Wivenhoe Dam as flooding risk hits Queensland

DISCHARGES from Brisbane's key flood shield, Wivenhoe Dam, have been boosted to about 1200 megalitres a day as storms continue to lash south-east Queensland.
Flood warnings have been issued for coastal rivers, streams and inland catchments from Noosa to Caboolture, north of Brisbane, with 114mm of rain recorded over 30 hours at the Sunshine Coast's Ewen Maddock Dam.

Meanwhile, an additional 141mm was recorded at Tomewin on the Gold Coast, where heavy surf forced the closure of all beaches at 1pm, local time.

SEQ Water's Flood Control Centre has been mobilised in preparation for further releases from the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine Dams late today and early tomorrow.

"A minor gate release may be necessary from Wivenhoe Dam if there is additional significant rainfall and this would not be likely to commence before mid morning tomorrow and would likely affect the Twin Bridges River Crossing," SEQ Water said in a statement.

Some Quotes from links, some are a couple of years old FYI:

* Queensland is set to be the first major region outside Thailand where the rain-making technology will be put into full effect..... Was the "full effect" three months later from nature or from another screw up by the Bligh government that caused innocent deaths, destruction, lower property values, public debt, and a walk in next election for a woman that most hated before the "full effect" 2011 floods?

* Which same unelected unaccountable group are found behind the privatisation of Australian owned assets — Qantas, the Commonwealth Bank, Victorian electricity, Telstra, Sydney airport, NSW electricity, Queensland rail, forestry, roads and ports? The masters of usury and debt, the House of Rothschild!

* A ROCKHAMPTON man has failed in a court bid to force the State Government to hold a referendum into the sale of Queensland Rail.

* EVERY secondary school boy could soon be offered a free jab to vaccinate them against a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. The makers of the Brisbane-developed cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil have asked the Federal Government to extend the highly successful mass immunisation scheme to boys. Since 2007, millions of young Queensland women have received the vaccine, invented by former Australian of the Year Professor Ian Frazer.

* QUEENSLAND'S long-awaited "smart licence" will be rolled out from today, with Toowoomba drivers to be the first to receive it. The Bligh Government will take a cautious approach to the rollout because of concerns over how the facial recognition cameras used with them will operate in a "real world" environment. [...] People who lose their licence will be issued with a legally valid paper receipt.
Bob Hawke would be rubbing his 1987 abandoned 'Australia Card' nazi hands together in 2010. August this year the Coalition wanted to bring it back as well. So called terrorists blow stuff up, and you and I (and whom ever that Asian women is used on that Qld specimen card) have to be scanned into a digital facial recognition data base system. These digital data bases will be linked up into a world wide digital data base system.

From me: Despite the massive flooding we have had to endurer for over 12mths WHY are the water restrictions still in place???

HOPE FOR THE BEST AND PREPARE FOR THE WORST

cheers

Highlighted bits; That explains why, when I had the photo taken for my licence a couple of mths ago it took forever for it to actually take the "photo", it was scanning my face. Far out brussel sprouts. NOT HAPPY JAN.
But I purposedly don't carry it with me 1. cause of the "chip" & 2. it's got my Strawmans name on it.

So it begins

A planned trial for new biometric technology in the Queensland area of Australia would see surveillance cameras installed throughout the area outfitted with face-recognition technology in an effort to track and find wanted criminals or other persons of interest in public spaces, according to a Courier Mail article.

The trial would seek to utilize the police database to analyze images collected of known offenders to have the surveillance technology find those on the database among those that not contained on the database.

In addition to installing new surveillance cameras, the National ICT Australia (NICTA, a research body funded by the Australian government) is investigating if already existent surveillance networks could be connected and leveraged to be part of the new system.

Despite the expressed purpose of tracking those involved in or suspected of crimes, there has been some public fears over whether the technology could eventually come to include the database of smart license registrants in Queensland that also uses face recognition technology. Nevertheless, officials are confident that the technology has evolved enough to prove a useful tool in fighting crime and have the trial earmarked for starting later this year.

Due to this, the trial continues to get attention from the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties maintaining that surveillance in general has proved to not reduce crime. Queensland’s Mayor Paul Pisasale wants assurance of an improvement of public safety resulting form the technology before he signs on as a supporter of the technology.

Tracking device found in chocolate bar

Updated: 13:35, Sunday April 15, 2012

A woman living in London found a high-tech tracking device in a chocolate bar sent to her by relatives in New Zealand.
The complaint was among about two hundred received by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry about food safety breaches since January last year.

The woman found a small watch-like battery in a Whittaker's chocolate slab, which was part of a gift from family.

Whittaker's food safety manager Claire McKay says the complaint was lodged via email and the company immediately issued an apology.

It was requested the chocolate be sent back to Whittaker's factory for investigation.

According to reports, other foreign objects discovered in food included a condom in a KFC meal, worms and maggots on supermarket pork and a sticking plaster on a pizza.

Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,

"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

MEN at Work frontman Colin Hay has told of his love for bandmate Greg Ham, as police investigate the veteran musician's mystery death.

Hay pays tribute to Greg Ham MEN At Work frontman Colin Hay has paid tribute to his tragic sidekick Greg Ham. "I love him very much," he said. "He's a beautiful man." ..Men at Work star dies

"We played in a band and conquered the world together," a devastated Hay said. "I love him very much. He's a beautiful man." Hay recalled their first meeting and their journey to pop superstardom.

"I met Greg Ham 40 years ago at (comedian) Kim Gyngell's house in 1972. Last year of high school. He had blond hair, rosy cheeks, ridiculous bright eyes.

"He was sharp. We were friends from then on, we liked each other."

There were tears for the 58-year-old who made a fortune in his heyday, but was a long way from the rock-star lifestyle in recent years.

The homicide squad is involved in the inquiry, with Det Sen-Sgt Shane O'Connell citing "unexplained issues" over the case.

Radiation near Port Mcquarie Update.............

Updated: Thursday, 19 April, 2012 at 02:53 UTC

Description

Independent chemical experts have failed to find any radioactive material at a Pacific Highway worksite on the NSW mid north coast, Roads Minister Duncan Gay says. Road workers became visibly ill after uncovering suspected radioactive material during a Pacific Highway upgrade near Port Macquarie - leading work on the project to be suspended. The area is close to the site of a 1980 accident involving a truck carrying waste. Mr Gay said initial investigations had found no radioactive material at the site, but assured people the government was "treating this investigation seriously and we are taking all the necessary precautions to protect workers at the site". "Independent chemical specialists could not find any radioactive material present in samples taken from the site to date, but investigations are ongoing into any other possible contaminated substances," Mr Gay said in a statement. He said a broader investigation would be conducted into the Pacific Highway site, but he said the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) had confirmed a container that fell from the truck in 1980 did not rupture and had been transported to Brisbane. "This will include examining the approvals process for the work, the risk assessments that were undertaken and what measures were put in place to protect road workers and the public," Mr Gay said. "First and foremost, I want to ensure the safety of workers and the broader community. "I've been advised by RMS [Roads and Maritime Services] that there are no threats to the travelling public, and that personnel are onsite to ensure the site is kept secure. "The NSW government will keep the community informed as updates come to hand."

CSIRO to map Nemo's journey

By Jonathon Hall
Updated April 20, 2012 18:13:40

A team of marine researchers has set out from Brisbane on a mission to map the famous East Australian Current.

The CSIRO ship Southern Surveyor is carrying a team of 13 scientists and 28 technicians and crew.

During a 10-day voyage they will deploy a series of ocean sensors in a 240 kilometre line stretching out from Brisbane.

The current, which featured in Hollywood film Finding Nemo, brings warm tropical water from far-north Queensland down past Tasmania and is used by migrating fish.

Chief scientist Ken Ridgway says the current has a huge impact on the coastal environment.

"If we didn't have the current there, the water off eastern Australia, particularly south of Brisbane, would be much cooler," he said.

"The current starts between Cairns and Townsville. It moves south and then really accelerates just north of Brisbane and reaches its major strength just south of there.

"It brings warm tropical waters further south so that has major implications for marine life and also for the local climate, particularly in Tasmania where the water is much warmer because of the existence of the current."

The aim of the CSIRO voyage is to monitor how the current is changing.

Five special moorings with instruments attached to them will be deployed in a line stretching from Stradbroke Island, off Brisbane, and out towards New Caledonia.

"We're really trying to get a comprehensive picture of the current from right across it's extent from the coast out to the outer edge of it and also from the top at the surface down to the ocean bottom," Mr Ridgway said.

"It's a major undertaking and it is historic in terms of oceanographic monitoring in Australia.

"The current is increasing in strength and pushing further southwards, so that's bringing warmer water to the south and a whole lot of marine organisms have followed that down so it's changed the whole environment of the ocean off eastern Australia over the last 60 years."

Mr Ridgeway says many people would know the current as the EAC thanks to the animated movie Finding Nemo.

"In the movie I think Nemo used the EAC to be transported from off Queensland down to Sydney, that's where the current flows," he said.

"A lot of animals do exploit the currents and because the EAC is a very strong current we can get speeds of up to four knots or two metres per second."

Sydney family wins court case against KFC

A SYDNEY father who claimed his daughter was left severely brain damaged from salmonella poisoning after eating a KFC Twister has won a court battle against the fast-food chain.
The family of Monika Samaan brought a multimillion-dollar compensation bid against KFC in the New South Wales Supreme Court, claiming the then seven-year-old became ill after eating the chicken wrap in Sydney's west in 2005.
KFC denied the claim but this afternoon Justice Stephen Rothman found in favour of the family in the NSW Supreme Court.
KFC has vowed to appeal the ruling.
In a statement, the restaurant said the case was clearly tragic but they were "deeply disappointed and surprised" by Judge Rothman's decision.
"We believe the evidence showed KFC did not cause this tragedy and, after reviewing the judgment and seeking further advice from our lawyers, we have decided to appeal Justice Rothman's decision," KFC Australia's chief corporate affairs officer Sally Glover said.
"We feel deeply for Monika and the Samaan family, however, we also have a responsibility to defend KFC's reputation as a provider of safe, high-quality food."
