Brisbane opens Wivenhoe Dam as flooding risk hits Queensland

DISCHARGES from Brisbane's key flood shield, Wivenhoe Dam, have been boosted to about 1200 megalitres a day as storms continue to lash south-east Queensland.
Flood warnings have been issued for coastal rivers, streams and inland catchments from Noosa to Caboolture, north of Brisbane, with 114mm of rain recorded over 30 hours at the Sunshine Coast's Ewen Maddock Dam.

Meanwhile, an additional 141mm was recorded at Tomewin on the Gold Coast, where heavy surf forced the closure of all beaches at 1pm, local time.

SEQ Water's Flood Control Centre has been mobilised in preparation for further releases from the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine Dams late today and early tomorrow.

"A minor gate release may be necessary from Wivenhoe Dam if there is additional significant rainfall and this would not be likely to commence before mid morning tomorrow and would likely affect the Twin Bridges River Crossing," SEQ Water said in a statement.
