As they continued to scour the suburbs of west Brisbane yesterday, the chief investigating officer confirmed to The Sunday Mail that her murder was not random. Brookfield residents who have contacted police in recent weeks are being told they have nothing to fear from a random killer prowling their suburb. "At this stage we don't believe it is random," Detective Superintendent Mark Ainsworth said. "We believe that Allison may have known her attacker." The Sunday Mail understands that Allison's husband, Gerard Baden-Clay, is yet to make an official statement to police after he reported her missing from their Brookfield home at 7.30am on April 20. He told police he last saw his wife about 10pm the night before, when she left for a walk. The body of the 43-year-old mother of three was found under the Kholo Creek bridge on April 30. Anonymous Coward User ID: 16009226 Australia 05/13/2012 06:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Heatwaves, bushfires predicted to hammer NSW Updated May 14, 2012 08:18:14 The Climate Commission has released a report predicting record heatwaves, bushfires and rising sea levels in New South Wales because of climate change. The report says the temperature in Sydney tops 35 degrees on just three days a year, but based on climate modelling, it will be 14 days per year by the end of the century. Federal Climate Commissioner Professor Lesley Hughes says western Sydney is getting disproportionally hotter and drier than the rest of Sydney. "If we compare western Sydney with the rest of Sydney, the number of hot days in western Sydney used to be three times as many as eastern Sydney, and now it's four times," she said. "So what we are seeing is not only rising temperatures but some parts of the country are getting disproportionally hotter." Read more....... [link to www.abc.net.au] Full report is due to be released some time today and should be available on the internet. |

The quake struck at 1.27pm, and was centred 10km northeast of Christchurch, just off the coast of New Brighton, at a depth of 11km. GNS Science said the quake was felt in the Christchurch area, with reports it was felt strongly in Aranui, Burwood and Marshland. Canterbury University student Thomas Mead (@ThomasMedia) described it on Twitter as the "biggest aftershock in a long time". Sarah Ruane (@thebookwitch) said: "That one was noisy - rumbling in and around and away again. "Now THAT was a big truck going past! Monitors wobbling and people jumping under their desks here at work. Haven't felt one in ages," Kineta Knight wrote (@kinetaknight). [link to www.nzherald.co.nz] |

That's when a solar eclipse will block out most of the sun, leaving a spectacular "ring of fire" shining in the sky for observers located along the eclipse's path. The event is what's known as an annular solar eclipse — from the Latin "annulus," meaning "little ring" — and its full glory should be visible from much of Asia, the Pacific region and some of western North America, weather permitting. At its peak, the eclipse will block about 94 percent of the sun's light. Other parts of the United States and Canada will still see a partial solar eclipse, without being treated to the ring of fire effect, though the East Coast will miss the event since the sun will have set before it begins. The eclipse will occur in the late afternoon or early evening of May 20 throughout North America, and May 21 for observers in Asia. Check out this eclipse skywatching guide to learn more about viewing locations and times. [link to news.yahoo.com] This site has viewing times. [link to www.space.com] And there is also this thread. Anonymous Coward User ID: 15851256 Australia 05/15/2012 05:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | AUSTRALIA'S most marginalised are doing it tougher than ever, with new research showing about 45 per cent of Salvation Army clients are selling and pawning possessions to make ends meet. Almost 30 per cent can't afford one decent meal a day while a quarter of them are falling deeper into debt, according to a survey of 1700 of the charity's clients. Major Andrew Craib said the results, released in the lead-up to the Salvos' Red Shield Appeal, showed parents in particular were becoming increasingly desperate. About half the people represented in the survey were struggling to support dependent children. "The great concern for me is the social exclusion that starts to take place," he said. "Children will come home with an invitation to a birthday party and (parents) will think,'Well, they're not going' because they don't want the children to be embarrassed because they don't have a present to take or nice clothes to wear." More than one third or 36 per cent of respondents could not afford to pay for their children's school outings or activities. One person surveyed said: "We lost everything in the flood less than 12 months ago and have not recovered emotionally or financially. And our relationship is suffering." Mr Craib said this was typical. "In an economic downturn or a natural disaster, the people that the Salvos see are often the first to be affected and the last to recover," he said. Nearly all the survey's respondents, 94 per cent, had no savings, and 87 per cent had no home contents insurance. The charity's need for funds was "desperate", he said, and would be stretched as the weather got colder and utility bills began rising. The annual doorknock appeal takes place this weekend, May 19 and 20, with a fundraising goal of $81.5 million. . [link to www.news.com.au] |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 15851256 Australia 05/15/2012 05:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Baden-Clay murder clue: Witness tells homicide probe of two four-wheel-drives A WITNESS has told police of seeing two four-wheel-drives near Kholo Creek crossing early on the day Allison Baden-Clay was reported missing. It is alleged a white four-wheel-drive didn't have its headlights on, only parking lights, and was closely tailing a smaller, blue four-wheel-drive at about 4am on April 20. The witness told of noticing the vehicles at Anstead in Brisbane's west - within 2km of where the 43-year-old mother of three's body was found 10 days later. Police said Mrs Baden-Clay was reported missing by her husband Gerard at 7.30am on Friday after she failed to return from her usual morning walk. He told police he had last seen his wife at their Brookfield home about 10pm the previous night. It is understood several members of the community have come forward with information, triggering a number of new lines of investigation. Police have established a major incident room with detectives, intelligence analysts and forensic officers to help with the investigation. Read more............... [link to www.news.com.au] |

Brisbane City Council has called in the police after protesters at a tent embassy defied a council eviction order. The protesters have been camping in Musgrave Park for about two months, to draw attention to the sovereign rights of indigenous people. But the council said they've had ample time to make their point and they must leave the park to make way for a Greek festival this weekend. Tent embassy organisers have told the ABC they've been advised police will move in to tear down the site this morning. [link to www.news.com.au] |

The quake hit the remote New Britain region at a depth of 154 kilometres, 512km northeast of Port Moresby, the US Geological Survey said. Powerful earthquakes are common in impoverished PNG, which sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hot spot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. A giant tsunami in 1998 killed more than 2,000 people near Aitape, on the country's northwest coast. . [link to www.news.com.au] |
