Over 90% of volcanoes are in the sea. These in a round about way cause ice ages but not the final push into one. At present we have a huge amount of underwater volcanic activity going on. Underwater volcanoes heat up the sea and cause it to evaporate. You can't have an ice age without something causing the sea to evaporate and causing it come down on the land as snow and then form into every growing sheets of ice. Just before an ice age, the planet seems like it is going into a period of warming but it is not. The warm seas give a false sense of reality but as soon as a large quake goes off on the land, the race into an ice age is extremely rapid. The sea is still warm and is a huge heat sink and it continues to evaporate but the land and air is cold and so the evaporating sea comes down as snow and it builds up on the land and does not melt and then forms huge glaciers. [link to www.siu.edu] The above information is important for several reasons - # 1 - Clearly we have global cooling not warming going on. # 2 - There is a huge amount of added weight going on at the bottom of the Earth, this weight has to be having a effect on all the land masses on Earth - especially fault lines and is probably contributing to increased volcanic activity. # 3 - Not many people realise this but the more there is a difference between the temperature at the poles and the equator, the more violent our weather becomes, if we really had global warming, the planet would be becoming a much nicer place to live. The below is a condensed article which proved disproportionate weight on the Earths Crust at the poles, does cause increased volcanic activity .... Steve McNutt, avolcanologist at the University of Alaska, noticed that the volcano's eruptions followed a surprisingly regular pattern. Periods of activity seemed always to occur in fall or winter. Twelve of the 16 eruptions since 1973 have occurred in the autumn—four of them during the same five-day period in November. Pavlof's most recent episode, in 1996, touched off in September and peaked in December. Researchers at the University of Cambridge in England poring over data for Sakura-jima, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, when he noticed the volcano had a strong tendency to erupt in December, January, and February. There seemed an obvious preference for Northern Hemisphere winter eruptions for many volcanoes," Most of the identified seasonal volcanoes lie along the Ring of Fire. Most of the volcanoes with the greatest potential to destroy life and property in the United States also are part of the ring. In the fall, powerful low-pressure systems march across the Aleutian Islands from west to east. As the lows move in over the Gulf of Alaska, there is less air pushing down on the water, so the local sea level rises. Meanwhile, air always moves away from high pressure toward low pressure. When high-pressure systems settle in over the Pacific Ocean, strong winds rush air toward the low pressure over the Gulf of Alaska, dragging in more water. "The net effect is that water is being pushed up against the Gulf of Alaska, and there's nowhere to escape, so it piles up," McNutt says. Sea levels at this time of year end up six inches higher than average as a result. The weight of that extra water, McNutt theorizes, triggers eruptions in the fall and winter: "According to our calculations, it's squeezing the chunk of real estate beneath the volcano and pushing the magma out like a hand on a toothpaste tube." Because the Northern Hemisphere has significantly more landmass at middle to high latitudes than does the Southern Hemisphere, a far greater amount of snow falls on land in the northern half of our planet. As a result, more of Earth's water is locked up in snow and ice between November and February than during the rest of the year. In those months, global sea levels drop by almost half an inch, leaving less weight to push down on the ocean floor. "The resulting change in stress, we thought, might be able to trigger eruptions. Most volcanoes are located near edges of continents or are islands and so would be particularly susceptible," Mason says. As snow, ice, and rainwater collect in the Northern Hemisphere during winter, the North Pole is pushed down a tenth of an inch. At the same time, the equator bulges out by half that much, and the entire Southern Hemisphere is pulled northward. In all, about one trillion tons of Earth's mass moves northward. An additional analysis of this most recent glacial/interglacial transition by Yokoyama et al. (2000), which has also been discussed by Clark and Mix (2000), revealed that a rapid rise in sea level, caused by the melting of land-based ice that began approximately 19,000 years ago, preceded the post-glacial rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration by about 3,000 years. Then, when the CO2 finally began to rise, it had to race to make up the difference; but it still took it a couple more thousand years to catch up with the sea level rise. Lastly, Petit et al. (1999) have shown that during all of the glacial inceptions of the past half million years, temperature always dropped before the air's CO2 concentration declined; and their data indicate, in their own words, that "the CO2 decrease lags the temperature decrease by several thousand years." Clearly, therefore, changes in the air's CO2 content cannot be responsible for these major climate changes, for it would be a strange cause indeed that followed its effect! Scientists believe that this is due to the way in which the polarity changed during the last solar maximum. This weaker configuration of the magnetic shield is letting in two to three times more cosmic rays (stardust) than at the end of the 1990s. Moreover, this influx could increase by as much as ten times until the end of the current solar cycle in 2012. Solar cycles are approximately eleven years in length. European Space Agency’s (ESA) Ulysses space probe data is finally making it possible to study how cosmic rays are distributed along the path of the Solar System through the local galactic environment. The space probe is showing us that a flood of dusty particles is heading our way. Astronomers think the current cosmic ray influx, apart from being favoured by the particular configuration of the Sun’s magnetic field, is also enhanced by the thickness of the interstellar clouds into which the Solar System is moving. Currently located at the edge of what astronomers call the local interstellar cloud, our Sun is joining our closest stellar neighbour Alpha Centauri in its dense cosmic ray cloud, which is less hot but denser than where we have been. (this info is a few years old we will we well into this cloud now) It takes over 70 thousand years to traverse a typical galactic cloud, interestingly this is about the same period of time earth is usually in a glaciated state before the next interglacial period of 10,000 to 15,000 years of warmth returns. The magnetic field is not constant as it’s produced by this turbulent flow that’s deep in the Earth’s core. Magnetism trapped in ancient pottery shows that over the past 4,000 years, the magnetic field has weakened by more than 50%. Since people have been measuring, it has been steadily declining. The first measurements were taken about 150 years ago, since then, it’s declined not quite 10 percent. Which shows it is dropping rapidly, as the magnetic field wanes, the protective shield it provides shrinks, thus exposing satellites to damage from cosmic rays and charged particles coming from the sun. Even now satellites can be damaged, if not destroyed, because the protective shield is so weakened. So there will be many more reflective clouds cooling the planet than previously and this explains Earth’s cooling trend which has been going on for about 4500 years now. The Earth was much warmer by over 6 degrees 4500 years ago. This is interesting ... The combined effect of orbital cycles cause long term changes in the amount of sunlight hitting the earth at different seasons, particularly at high latitudes. For example, around 18,000 years ago, there was an increase in the amount of sunlight hitting the Southern Hemisphere during the southern spring. This lead to retreating Antarctic sea ice and melting glaciers in the Southern Hemisphere.(Shemesh 2002). The ice loss had a positive feedback effect with less ice reflecting sunlight back into space (decreased albedo). This enhanced the warming. As the Southern Ocean warms, the solubility of CO2 in water falls (Martin 2005). This causes the oceans to give up more CO2, emitting it into the atmosphere. The exact mechanism of how the deep ocean gives up its CO2 is not fully understood but believed to be related to vertical ocean mixing (Toggweiler 1999). The process takes around 800 to 1000 years, so CO2 levels are observed to rise around 1000 years after the initial warming (Monnin 2001, Mudelsee 2001).
