there is the slim chance that she was born with a brain abnormality that caused her tone this way despite excellent parenting (seems she was born around 1986, when the Chernobyl fallout was coming down) but 9 times out of 10 its bad parenting. Peer pressure can't seriously influence a kid that is well-grounded from good parenting in the formative years.

I am no tramp. I know her father very well, we were married for 13 years. He has no communication skills, and has abandoned my two children. My second marriage was very successful, with a loving, wealthy, supportive, vibrant man who died three years ago. I have been a stay at home mother who has showered love and encouragement on her children. My daughter if frankly a very unhappy person that only sees the glass half full. I wish I had you, I have a degree, also have 50k in debt. Which is in default, therefore I live 8k below the poverty line because I cant get my tax refund. I now have a daughter, whom I would love to give a better life than I had, which was middle class not poor. Until I can find a way out of this catch 22 of student loan debt im in, its impossible to do that. I work a full time job and can barely pay my bills. I suggest therapy to assist in a gradual put permanent weaning and learning process. Look up permissive, assertive, and authoritarian parenting. Only one of those will raise a great kid. OP wants to switch from one bad one to the other bad one. Yeah, not the recipe for success.
