Religion is going to destroy our planet and you know its true

I've noticed in my life that the people who are concerned about the declining state of affairs on this planet and the people who tend to be apathetic about it comes down to a matter of beliefs. People basically fall into three camps: an intense belief in their cultural description of the afterlife, a lukewarm feeling that their could be "something", or people who believe only in the power of observation and science. The first camp is hopeless, the second can be converted, and the third is the only shot our species has at survival.

Religion hinders any meaningful conversation you can have with a person for why the world is so corrupt, why 1 billion people lack access to water, how we are destroying the biosphere, etc. because it encourages delusional if not dangerous thinking. Truth be told, someone who believes that they live on in some magical afterlife, rather than the memories and DNA of their descendants, is not invested in the current state of affairs. Their treasure is in heaven, so why give a shit if this rare and beautiful gem called Earth goes up in flames? Or, they believe that their version of god is going to come back and save everyone, and it requires no mature social evolution on behalf of the human race.

You can't even have an objective, scientific conversation with a person who believes Jesus rode around on a velociraptor. We have theocracies trying to get their hands on weapons that could vaporize entire cities, theocracies that believe their version of the truth is coming back to make everything right. I don't know about you, but all religion, in general, scares the fucking shit out of me. I can't imagine myself in a cycle of working all week, turning on the evening news and watching humanity circle the toiletbowl, and then going for an hour into some building where magically I will be told all is well and that God is in control. God is not in control. The sooner we accept that as a species, the sooner we give ourselves control over our delusions and our fate on this planet. Godlike technology demands godlike responsibility. It cannot coexist with childish, outdated belief systems that desensitize us to our collective failure to make this a decent place to live.
