As someone who grew up on the endings of good hiphop and then the beginning of gangster rap, I've seen the transition to the shit we have now. Can anyone clearly explain why the government agrees to private prisons? How is the money per inmate per day decided on? I highly doubt their stay and food is worth around $350 a day. |

Can anyone clearly explain why the government agrees to private prisons? How is the money per inmate per day decided on? I highly doubt their stay and food is worth around $350 a day. Because our government is controlled by the large corporation/s that are making money from these prisons. Hip hop went from a feel good party genre that unified diverse groups of people and had real meaning to bullshit fake gangsta rap almost overnight. Groundbreaking acts like A Tribe Called Quest, BDP and Brand Nubian were replaced by small time fuckwits with nothing to tell us but how thought they were, selling guns and crack and peeling wigs back. They HAD to destroy hip hop. It didn't fit into the race baiting horseshit schemes they so enjoy. Hip hop did sooooooo much to bring races together in such a short time. A real shame. |

They were preaching about fight the power. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1158188 He said: "I was never a fan of it but even I could tell the difference. Rap acts that talked about politics or harmless fun were quickly fading away as gangster rap started dominating the airwaves." Groups like Public Enemy were sidelined, too. Check out Professor Griff's vids on YouTube and you will see why he was kicked out of the group. |

Look how rappers such as Tupac tried to openly defy this evil--dead now. You don't see opposition to this unrelenting force besides in more underground rap, which will of course never reach the fame that mainstream rap, which glorifies tptb and such, has. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10957829 Truth.... That's word son. I grew up in the Boogie Down, you know the line "Hip Hop started out in the park." I was at a lot of those jams. What a fucking great time to be alive and living in the thick of what was happening. Hip hop was more than a genre of music though, I think I did it a disservice labeling it as such earlier. It was a new way of thinking, it was eye opening, it was real and it was Fresh. The record companies had noting to do with the real shit. They didn't even bother with it until they realized the money making potential. Those snakes saw us white boys at the parks, hanging out with brothers and Ricans and whothefuckeveritdontmatter and they knew. I never really felt a part of something so unifying. I learned so many things about different ways of life and the people that lived them. Skin color NEVER mattered. Sure, some of the acts preached 5%er shit and whatnot, but if you were there and listening and representing, you were given Respect and Love man. I'm about to cry I miss those days so much. Now, every time I turn on the tv or login, I'm subjected to race baiting and illogical hatred between races. This world has changed and never for the better. |

Makes you wonder... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16143057 [link to www.hiphopisread.com] amazing find op, the rabbit hole goes way deeper by the way. Not far-fetched as far as I'm concerned. Definitely coincides with the drastic change in hip hop in the early 90's Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7550612 Agreed. Same here. Sux that the only rap I really liked was the hardcore stuff. I was young and impressionable, although it's still better than the crybaby, polo wearin, rap of today. |
