Read between the lines....this is not about our health, weight or getting rid of 'evil' sugar...this about getting more artifical sweetners in our diet!....operative word 'recommendation'.
BTW, ALL soda, regular or diet has phosphates and leached calcium from your bones, ie - bone spurs, kidney stones, etc.

Aspartame is some evil shit. I cannot begin to describe how evil it is..

I agree. People in Cambridge that I know all hate aspartame and the evil bastard who got it into our diets. You know that guy. Liberal Cambridge is anti artificial sweeteners. I go there to buy stevia and honey for cheap $. This debate is not over in Cambridge because there is no more anti big corp aspartame poison place in the country. There is more freedom to be an individual in Cambridge than almost any other place. You stupid stupid stereo-typers!

That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to refer the matter of a ban on soda and sugar-sweetened beverages in restaurants to the Cambridge Public Health Department for a recommendation.

Re: City of Cambridge, Massachusetts looking to ban soda pop and other "sugary beverages" from being sold in restaurants!
Actually, Cambridge MA is also a place filled with mom and pop stores and resturaunts. Some of them have lasted for generations. Cambridgians really don't go for those factory places you see all over America that serve greasy dead foods under yellow lights. (I know--I've toured the country often with bands in a van.) There are no real vegetables in those places, the management is mean and stupid, the workers mostly fat smokers and miserable and they serve Big Gulps. What a relief it is to get back to Cambridge and real and tasty food. Served by real people working for small companies, many family owned. I worked for the Swiss Alps resturaunt in the 70s. We served cruet a la flamange. ha ha.

I call people stupid fucks who 1. don't know what Cambridge is really like and 2. use stereotypes to color a whole place. 3. I call stupid fucks people who are stupid fucks. That's allowed in a place like Cambridge, so watch yourself.

Also, I'm sure you can get whatever kind of sugar drinks you want in Cambridge. Something like Indian or VietNamese Ice Tea is still the same. Nobody will stop that. That's just stereotyping. No one will go out of business because of a lack of big business (Store 24 etc) Big Gulps. Hospitals and schools in Cambridge banned that garbage years ago for health reasons. It's The Same As banning heroin.
People said the sane stupid stuff when the rock clubs banned smoking inside. Now there is sidewalk society and you can breathe in the clubs and not go home stinking.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 553712

I appreciate you being more polite. and less condescending. So I thank you

I just want you to see the nefarious agenda of promoting aspartame and nutrasweet in lieu of corn syrup sodas. Ive seen too many health probs and people recovering after they recognize this poisons effect on their body

Its a evil agenda afoot, and not a noble cause to get people healthier but sicker.

There are more small bakeries in Cambridge than most any other place I've been except Brooklyn. Any kind you want. Almost every block on Mass Av has a bakery where you can get Real bread like your grandmother baked. When and if the shit hits the fan from a solar flare (or whatever), they will be handing out bread for free in Cambridge because many of the bakeries use actual fire instead of electricity, and the people care about their customers as people, not just as revenue...like those corporate chains that don't care about anything but money. The job of "law-makers" is to make "law". Now that they have written so many laws that they've covered all the sensible topics, they either continue to write insane, stupid laws, or they make themselves irrelevant and put themselves out of a job.

It's inevitable that eventually everything will have to be made illegal, in order to keep the "law-makers" in business.

Also, if you want micro brewed beer from anywhere in the world, come to Cambridge MA. You might be able to watch a local band playing actual instruments at the same time, in AC, without cigarette smoke up your nose. You just better keep your parking meter filled with quarters...unless it's after 6 pm or the on the weekend.

Over Packaging is a sign of food shipped from Argentina by a big corp that goes bad in 2 days. Best to buy fresh grown from a farm a few miles out, like you do in Cambridge MA.

It seems the USDA is issuing a loan guarantee to a Louisiana company that makes sweeteners for soda and other food products.

WASHINGTON, June 18, 2012 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA has approved a loan guarantee of $25 million to Myriant Corporation to help construct a bio-based production facility in Lake Providence, La.

"This project will support the President's "all-of-the-above" energy strategy and create job opportunities for American workers," said Vilsack. "The facility will bring opportunity to an area of Louisiana that has been battered by hurricanes, and has lacked new development. It will also expand a market for farmers."

The facility will make succinic acid, which is used primarily as a sweetener within the food and beverage industry. Currently it is made from butane, using petrochemicals, but the new plant will convert grain sorghum, an actual food source and a sustainable resource source, into succinic acid and ammonium sulfate. It is expected to produce 15,000 tons per year of succinic acid and 18,000 tons per year of ammonium sulfate. [link to www.usda.gov]

Grain is your 'diabetic demon.' Most of that 'fiber' from whole grain is indigestible and causes more problems than it prevents. And in case you didn't know: whole wheat flour goes rancid very quickly unless you keep it the freezer, as do products made from it. Can you really imagine school lunchroom staff, so often drawn from the least educated classes, taking proper precautions for maintaining whole grain products safely, or even knowing the difference between fresh and rancid?

I think it is necessary that the national and your state constitutions be researched exhaustively that your rights are not being violated as well as your county and city charters.

Government officials or public servants seem to have a habit of railroading rights and laws without consequence to you but lining their pockets or to embellish their power base.

Question everything.

Re: City of Cambridge, Massachusetts looking to ban soda pop and other "sugary beverages" from being sold in restaurants!
OH THE IRONY!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

You know darn well politicians invested in this company before they guaranteed that loan!

I know about that rancid part, I bought some whole grain flour, it went bad fast.

The guy I know that works and runs his district lunch room and orders the food, said all the food is fresh and daily. They dont even store the untouched baby carrots in the salad bar. They toss it all out and get a new shipment in.

That's criminal! I do know that it goes on all over the country too. At the very least, they should be taking that produce to a local animal shelter, that usually ends up with all sorts of veggie-eating animals to care for. If this is happening in your local area, perhaps you could find a local shelter to ask for that stuff before it gets tossed out? Most supermarkets don't mind giving away out-of-date produce for people's livestock; that's just up to whomever it is running the produce department. Waste is a sin and we'll all pay dearly for it, even if we're not the perps.
