The National Weather Service forecast excessive heat from Illinois to Georgia, a day after a deadly "derecho"--or fast-moving "straight-line" of high winds--ripped through the nation's midsection, while record triple-digit temperatures throttled several major cities. Atlanta hit 106 degrees on Saturday, one of more than 1,500 U.S. temperature records broken last week. "It is very unsafe outdoors for those susceptible to these extreme conditions," the weather service warned. The heat combined with moderate humidity will result in heat indices topping 115 degrees. [link to news.yahoo.com] wow fuck ....12 people dead and no power sheeet for the AC's..what a disaster....that's the worst and most scary news I have ever heard friend...NOT! There are other places where this is a daily reality friend... and most people cope and just do the best they can. |

Biochemky User ID: 919411 United States 07/01/2012 01:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you have lost electricty or lose electricity during this heat wave, here are some tips on "How to keep cool without electricity" from someone whose parents grew up in southern Arizona before air conditioning was invented. Do you have any friends/family that have a basement? Just like a natural cave, basements tend to stay cool independently of whether or not the air conditioning is running in the house above. If some basement space is available, temporarily relocate there. If you still have water service to your house, buy a small blow-up kiddy pool for your backyard and go out there and take a dip every so often to cool down. You can refill the pool up with cool water as often as you need it. Go to the dollar store and get some empty plastic spray bottles. Fill them up with water and keep one in each room of the house. Spritz yourself with water over your face neck and arms each time you think about it and the evaporation of the water off your skin will cool your core body temperature down. To sleep more comfortably when it is warm, place a cot, camp bed, pool chaise lounge, or banana chair out on your back patio or porch. Soak 2 bed sheets with water, wring them out, and and put them in a tub next to the cot/bed on the porch/patio. When you are ready to sleep, lay down on the cot/bed on top of a dry bed sheet and put one of the damp sheets over you. This allows the evaporative process to transfer heat from you to the sheet and cool you down so you can drift off to sleep. The second damp sheet is for use later in the night. Lastly, drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol, avoid caffeine, take several cool/cold showers a day, be inactive during the worst heat of the day (do whatever chores need to be done in the evening or very early morning). Being too warm wears a body down, no matter what age you are. With so many people without electricity, casualties of the extreme heat are likely to increase dramatically. The very young (babies and toddlers) and the elderly are the most sensitive to heat extremes. People need to do whatever they can to stay cool and help others around them (children, elderly family members and/or neighbors) to stay cool. |

Some summers are just hotter than others. They will restore the power in the DC area rather quickly as there are crews from all over already en route. Meanwhile, just keep wetting yourselves down. Get a spray bottle and mist until the power is restored. One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one. Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway. Where I live, 110+temps are the norm during the summer. Open windows at night, close to trap in cool air in the morning while blocking light, peraps a fan, and totally comfortable. Heck, that's what I'm doing right now. Have a swamp cooler but never bother with it. I don't think more than 5% here have ACs and we had a week or two with temps up to 38C. Not the end of the world, i personally like to go out for a walk when the temps are 33-34C here - most sheeple hide at home and it's quite refreshing. |

Rural people didn't even have that for another couple decades. No cell phones either. And yet, they survived. For thousands of years. Amazing. |
