Interesting. So I went and took a look at Brazil TODAY. Here is a bit of what I found:

In a way your are correct, my grandmother was one of 18 if I rememebr right. Only 6 made it past the age of 18. Those 6 all made it in to their 80's but you still married out at a very young age.

Oh and my grandmother was with her husband from the age of 13 through 96.

Its a feminist law. The problem should be covered already under child protection laws.

Yup. Around 10 (or more usually, 12) is when puberty starts -- NATURE'S age of consent. The idea of the age of consent being 18 is a purely modern creation, based on the fiction that people between the age of puberty and 18 are not sexual.

Touchy subject.

This is probably the most pertinent post. Things were very different at that time. Families and communities were much more close knit units than they are today and life expectancy was a major issue.

OP, have you ever been to a cemetery from that time? It is eye opening, from a historical standpoint.

The industrial age that followed changed that. You can see the same dynamic in today's world with the technological age.

Attempting to apply today's social values to people at various times and cultures in history is a losing proposition. They were working within their limitations, to put it simply.

Does that make okay in today's society? No, life expectancy is no longer the dominant issue.
