Yep one of your normal childhood diseases! My little boy had it last year. Wee fever. Slight rash and back to normal. More serious if an adult gets it though.

Severe complications of HFMD caused by EV-71 in Cambodia

The investigation into the illnesses and deaths in Cambodia, which mainly affected very young children, concluded that a severe form of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) was the cause in the majority of cases reported to the Ministry of Health.

Samples from a total of 31 patients were obtained and tested for a number of pathogens by Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. Most of these samples tested positive for enterovirus 71 (EV-71) which causes HFMD. A small proportion of samples also tested positive for other pathogens including _Haemophilus influenzae_ type B and _Streptococcus suis_. It was not possible to test all the patients as some of them died before appropriate samples could be taken.

A total of 78 cases were identified. These included the initial 62 cases reported by Kantha Bopha hospital, and cases reported from other hospitals. Of these, the investigation focused on 61 cases that fitted a specific criteria (the case definition), and of which 54 had died.

I see so many comments about how this is a common childhood disease. We all know that who have kids.

I think the main story here is compromised immune systems especially in Children....How is radiation affecting them? Do they get any radiation from Japan?

Chem spraying...what else...GMO foods. How do we raise healthy kids?

I thing it has to be a different strain of the same illness that we see here in the US. I just found this article.

It says that the illness is minor in the US but for some reason its killing hundreds there.

The article says "WHO data shows that 890,000 cases of HFMD were reported by China in the first five months of the year. 244 deaths related to these illness have been noted through the end of May. China's case count is more than double the number of HFMD cases for the same five months in 2011."

That seems like its way more serious than what we see here. I wonder if something has weakened their immune systems? Kinda scary!

MANILA, Philippines – It's not bird flu or SARS. It's Enterovirus 71.

This virus is behind the “mystery illness” that killed 64 young children and hospitalized 66 in Cambodia, scientists in Phnom Penh said on Sunday, July 8.

The Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh announced that it discovered Enterovirus Type 71 in about two-thirds of patients. The virus is the “perfect explanation” for the deaths, according to the institute’s virology unit head Philippe Buchy who was cited by Bloomberg.

“We can now focus on how to contain it,” Buchy said.

Enterovirus Type 71 is a strain of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), which is widespread in Asia but rare in Cambodia.

HFMD, a human disease due to intestinal viruses, is not the same as foot-and-mouth disease, which only affects animals. Children affected by HFMD generally suffer high fever, rashes, respiratory and, sometimes, neurological problems.

It took longer for the experts to identify the virus since, in the 64 of the 66 deaths reported since April, the child’s health deteriorated faster than expected. The Enterovirus 71 usually does not lead to such quick deaths.

Fine, that means the cause/effect remains speculative and unproven, yet the man opens the way to sell useless antiviral treatments.

Another word for this "virus": VACCINES.

My niece recently caught it at daycare and spread it to her father (my brother). Quite a nuisance, but easily treatable and not life threatening.

They need an epidemic more than anywhere else so does India.
