I have found altered state happens at will, when surrounded by others.

Example; Last night I was around my friends house, had 2 beers and we were sorting out his plants, re-potting and the like, then I go within, without meaning too, I hear his thought of what to do now, and assumed it was my thought, yet it did not feel like me, then I see him go and follow through with the thought, which was an indication to me that I had picked up on his thoughts/feelings.

This is the hardest part for me, to know what is me and what is not me, I know to know yourself is key, yet, confidence in knowing oneself and knowing oneself is a fine line.
