Op,

I am happy to hear that your dog is aright however if you see a dog running free report it to animal control and provide the address of the owner if possible as all dog owners need to be responsible for their dogs.

If a warning fails to catch the attention of the owners, the first time the following summons will do the trick. If legal in your state then carry pepper spray whenever you walk the dog s that will immediately subdue an aggressive.
 Quoting: SilverPatriot

I can't use pepper spray. Sheba has asthma, and I have Allergy Induced Asthma/COPD. One whiff, and we are in trouble. I do call when i see a loose dog. The Pitts that attacked Sheba came out of the side gate of their yard. Someone didn't shut it. Their back gate was padlocked shut.

When walking our senior citizen St. Bernard who no longer goes on excessively long walks due to her age I do carry a rock pick with me when walking her.

Further, as most St. Bernard dogs she is a calm, kind goofy dog and like yours would not adequately protect herself if attacked by n aggressive dog.

My young Anatolian Shepherd requires no assistance as a puppy he protected himself against a male aggressive Labrador Retriever running free on our property.

My three month old pug broke all four of the bones in his puppy paw. It happened on Sat July 28th as well while traveling to Portland OR from Montana. We are hoping it can heal without needing surgery. Im glad your pooch will be ok. I saw the date and read the title and had to check out the thread.

For a broken bone, you need to go to a Vet. This could affect the growth of his leg.

You re lucky after my Anatolian Shepherd was attacked he is wary of all dogs except our St. Bernard, puppies and of course cats any cat as he has made our cats into his flock and will try to corral any feral cat he sees.

The problem is that he stands 32” at the withers and 117 pounds and is not fully-grown if the idiot neighbors let their male aggressive Labrador free the fight would be short, fast and non-stoppable.

And I'd wonder if that same sort of experience may have had something to do with the dogs who attacked. Or was it territorial-ism?

Whatever it was I feel bad for their owners too - it sucks to see your own dog bite another dog or worse, a person. My dog has snapped a few times to the point where I muzzel him for public exposure - and am otherwise careful the people exposed to him are big enough and not scared at all.

Re: My Dog Got Hurt Today
Cloe, my german shep chocolate lab mix, is a totally unique character.

She LOVES the smell of cannabis, and will smell you down if you have any. She begs for it and everything.

Anyway, aside from being a stoner, she has always been the most loyal dog.

She is seven as of the 28th and looks great.

It's hard because I'm a 20 year old male and she brings the baby outta me.

She pretty much is like me. She doesn't like her species in general, but is nonjudgemental, friendly and VERY wity.

In all honesty, she was by my side through what was one of the hardest times in my life, choosing how the rest of it would be.
When I first met her was my awakening. I decided drugs and failing weren't my thing in 7th grade and moved back in with my dad. She was actually my little sister's, but I grew the biggest attachment. But not at first. I was abusive, careles and downright MEAN. But I am 100% a different person. I see her now and wonder why I ever was the way I was.

My parents, being the materialistic sheeple they are, were going to dump her if I didn't find a place for her because of the hair. So I moved out and brought her with me.

I love her like a family member. No question.

It's fun going through the stages of a dogs life. It's much like a child.

I would be lying if I said it doesnt bring a tear to my eye, her becoming elderly and getting one step closer to her end.

Love EVERY MINUTE with them!

Your close call with Sheba was just a way to bring you two closer. She'll never leave your side. Even when she goes, her energy remains partially with you!
All is divine in your minds eye.

My dog is now muzzled when we take him to the veterinarian and if there are only cats or puppies, we take off the muzzle as he ignores cats that slap his nose, as he is a flock guardian dog.

Some breeds were bred to fight and in spite of socialization of the dog when the owner is not present then basic breeding instincts presides.

We used to have a German Shepherd/Rottweiler cross who thought he was a mother cat and once mistook an opossum for a cat and wanted to bring it home. He gently brought baby birds to me however, the mere sight of a male dog made him want to kill it and a male dog never attacked him.

I realized the Anatolian Shepherd would need proper socialization with new people and dogs and as long s properly introduced he accepts new humans but male dogs are another matter.

The problem is that my dog is quite handsome and people want to reach out to him without asking first or doing so without permission and the dog responds hostilely as the breed responds negatively to having strangers touch the top of their heads.

I believe this is due to one of their attack strategies and from a dead stop he can jump above my head and I am 5’6” tall but the breed has been known to kill wolves, jackals, bears, boars and wild big cats with their speed and maneuvers.

The problem with a taser, or a cattle prod, is that the electricity goes through the bad dog and into the one he/she is biting, your dog. Be sure to zap when they're disconnected.

BBs on a big dog just piss them off, as will any light gauge weapon. Aside from getting their attention (and if that's all you needed to do your voice would work as well) they do little good. A fairly powerful pellet gun sometimes works, and firecrackers (although they're slow to use in an emergency). Living on an Indian reservation we have rifles and shotguns, but that's just not practical in urban areas. Anyhow, you need the weapon that works, and that's situational and practical.

As for the police, get to the vet if you're going to press charges, otherwise play it by ear. Courts like proofs and substantiation or they tend to do nothing. You could win a claim even against people without means and get a settlement, which they would then have to pay for with time in jail, and the dogs could be euthanized. Personally, I don't trust pit bulls, nor pit bull owners. Who would want an animal bred specifically to kill or maim another animal.

Glad to hear your dog is healing, it really sucks when they end up dead, I know, someone poured gas down the throat of my dog when I was about 6 years old. She ran up to me and laid at my feet frothing at the mouth, and died. I'll never forget, nor forgive.

Re: My Dog Got Hurt Today
I was taking my dog, Sheba, out for a walk around 2pm this afternoon, when she was attacked by 3 Pit Bulls that got out of their yard.2 of them were like bulldozers, and the other one was smaller, a younger dog I presumed. 1 of the adults bit her on the right side of her face, right shoulder, and upper right front leg. The other adult dog sniffed her, but did not bite her. The younger dog jumped on her back, but did not bite her either.
I kicked, swung my fists, and screamed bloody murder. I dropped to the ground and grabbed her away from the Pit that was biting her. Yes, I literally wrenched my dog away from the jaws of that Pit. The dogs retreated back to their yard. A neighbor called 911, and another neighbor went and got my husband. We were about a block from the house.
I got skinned knees from dropping and grabbing Sheba away from the Pit. Sheba has a few puncture marks and a cut on the right side of her face, and a few more puncture marks on her shoulder and leg. Her right side of her face is a bit swollen right now, but she will be OK.
Sheba is up to date on her shots. Since her injuries were not serious, I did not take her to the Vet. I checked her out top to bottom and cleaned her up. Our usual Vet was closed by the time the police took the report. I am glad she was not seriously hurt, as the nearest Vet that was open, was a good 45 minutes away.
I was lucky that these Pits were only animal aggressive, not people aggressive. Otherwise, I might not be here tonight to type this post.
This is not the first time Sheba has been attacked. In the past 9 years, Sheba has been attacked by a Husky, 2 Rotts, and a Great Dane/Boxer mix. It is not the breed, it is the deed and the irresponsible owners.
For the record, Sheba is a 9 years old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Her mother dog was AKC registered. I never registered her with the AKC, because she is a part of my family, and not a show dog. Sheba was born with multiple genetic defects and maladies. She is deaf, partially blind, has asthma, and was born with malformed female organs. She was spayed at a young age.
Sheba is a sweet lap dog, a big one, but the gentlest dog I have ever owned. She loves everybody and everything. She sleeps with our cat, and licks/grooms him.
I usually carry my cell phone with me, and a box cutter. I didn't have either on me this afternoon when I took out Sheba for a walk. My bad, and I will never forget again.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like she'll be okay. And you sound like a great owner. My best to you both.

I am so sorry about your dog. :( We had a collie/shepard mix at my old house 12 years ago, that a neighbor poisoned with rat poison in raw chicken. We didn't get her to the Vet in time. :( We had already bought our current home, and were moving the dog over the next day. We were a day too late, and Dutchess died.

I went to court the last time. Sheba had got ripped up by a Great Dane/Boxer mix named Bear, that ran out of his house 3 1/2 years ago. The owners brother tried to get that dog off of my dog,I was screaming and trying to pull Sheba away from him, and a neighbors Bichon Frieze tried to help my dog(one of Sheba's neighborhood buddies that sometimes walked with us). The Bichon Frieze got bit too. Sheba was covered head to toe with bite marks, and she had 5 large gashes on her side. I HAD to rush her to the Vet. The owner came over to my house the next day, and promised to make payments on the Vet bill for Sheba. He never did. I repeatedly sent letters to the owner, with copies of the Vet bill. The attacking dog did not have shots or a lisence. I went to court, and the owner of that dog, along with several members of his family, were laughing about the attack in court. The judge did not think it was funny. The pictures of my badly injured dog were not the least bit humorous. I got reimbursed within a week after going to court.

A spray bottle filled with ammonia might work. Or one of those bazooka water guns ?

If you know of neighbors nearby who would also like to curtail this kind of thing, perhaps a group of you could visit the owners of those dogs and express your displeasure in a non confrontational manner and make them aware of possible legal consequences such as fines, lawsuits/judgements/lien attachments. They might not have much money, but a lien attached to a vehicle could get their attention if this is possible in your state. Give them something to think about.

I'd say the owners of the pit bulls need to have a lesson in keeping their dogs tethered. Call animal control on them. Better yet, an M-80 stuck in their front doorknob and set off at about 3am should scare them enough to make them ditch several hundreds of dollars of meth before they realize they're not being raided.
