New puppy :|
I recently got a new puppy that has ate the power cord to my computer and ate up my head phones twice. He's a mix of shih tzu and terrier; very cute puppy.

I've broke him of eating up the cords to my computer. Yet for some reason, every time I take him to the gas station with me (I have him wait in the truck) he shits in my seat. He waits till I'm gone then he shits in my seat :( I've rubbed his nose in it yet he still does it. Halp

Curious why he didn't get electrocuted while chewing the power cord to the computer?

Well it's not a desktop computer; it's just a netbook. I wondered the same thing. I don't guess it has enough power to kill him though.

OP, how old is this puppy?
What are you feeding this little guy? Brand, wet/dry..is he getting any table scraps??

Rubbing his nose into his poop isn't going to teach him anything, that's the wrong way to go about it.
I almost didn't respond because of this, it ticks me off when peoploe do this. I replied because I am concerned that it could be because of his diet, and possibly needing to be dewormed.

Re: New puppy :|
FYI positive reinforcement works better than negative. Rubbing his nose in it only will confuse the little one. Make it a big game when you go or walk them in the morning and they perform natures ritual. They will want to please you so, ingrain that behavior at an early age.
When you leave them alone in the car and nature calls you are to blame. Also if you punish the little one over potty they will never learn that it is OK to do in front of you and can expect many messes in your future.
Puppies teething is a painful time find chew toys that have edges for teething. Power cords are perfect in their eyes so always have a toy near to distract them.

He's three months old. I just give him a bowl of dry food (dollar store brand) and he always gets some of my food. I know pork is bad for him so I do not feed him that.

He's got plenty of toys :) Happens every time there's really no way (I can think of) to positively enforce it.

Re: New puppy :|
Try reinforcing him with little treats when he goes to the bathroom outside so he associates the 'reward' with being outside to get it. Also, if you catch him chewing on something when you're home, instead of yelling at him, take some pennies/dime and put them in a soda can and tape it shut and shake it in his vicinity to startle him and break his attention from whatever he's engaged in.... Mostly this is just a phase for young dogs and they will grow out of it in due time, just be patient and diligent.

I guess what I'll have to do is pay more attention to when he goes to the bathroom. Giving him lots of attention and hype when he goes in places he's supposed too. Thanks everyone for replying :)

No problem, hang in there and enjoy the company of your buddy! hf

P.S. look into the food you are giving him. If it's one of the cheaper brands and corn is listed as the primary ingredient, it may be upsetting his stomach or causing bowel movements shortly after he eats it (passing right through him).

THank you for responding. I'm familiar with the dog foods at the Dollar General. The only one that is even possibly passable is the Pedigree, but your not getting a good quality dog food! When you have a chance, campare price versus quality on say Amazon to get an idea of what you can expect to pay for a good dog food. If money is an object, a decent fair priced dog food is Chicken for the Soul. The larger the bag the less it costs in the long run, but it would probably be too much unless you could vacuum seal poertions and put the unused away somewhere, or even back in the large bag. Here is a link to the puppy food, which is formulated specifically for a young pup,
[link to www.amazon.com] An older dog, for just a few dollars more, you can get a 30, or 35 pound bag. I'm not sure if the puppy comes in a larger bag like this. But you can pick something like this up in a pet store, although Amazon has great prices. Especially using super saver, you get free shipping right to your door. No, I'm not a sales rep, I have a couple of dogs and a cat, and when money is tight, I go with this brand. It also isn't on a recall list like a lot of other name bnrand dog foods.

A good food, maybe mixed with good canned, adding some good oil, and water for moisture is all you need, he doesn't need the human food. It actually causes digestive issues which might have something to do with why he is messing in places besides outdoors.

Go online and do some reading on puppy care, there's a lot ot learn if you've never had a dog or little pup before. They can be a joy, but if you are doing it wrong and can't "fix" the problem, he could wind up being a candidate for the pound, which would be terrible. Like another poster said, dogs love to please! Lots and lots of praise! Praise when he poops in the right place, praise when he sits, even if it's after you position him. Never be verbally or physically abusive, you don't want him to fear you, just love you!hf

Very good advice guys! Thanks again :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8685419

OP, I hope all the advice given does help you out. I did forget to tell you something. Look at the ingredients in the Chicken for the Soul. Look at what is listed first, second, etc. Then go look at your puppy's bag of feed. Because that's what it is, meal! Corn, fillers, not something you want to be putting in his belly. When you see the first couple of items listed, such as
Chicken Meal, you want to try to avoid this. A lot of higher priced dog foods DO use this, but list chicken first. That "meal" more often than not consists of things that would freak you out!

Switching from one brand of dry to another dry is enough to mess up the puppy's digestive system! Throwing in human food can cause the same problem.

A lot of people make their own dog foods. You can do it too! But research it, there is much more to it than what most people think.

Stay away from the flea products from hatrtz, too, sold at the Dollar Stores! Again, you can save money buying good stuff online, and not having to pay double, triple at a vet';s office. Good care now will keep you out of the vet's office for the most part!

Enjoy your little guy, and I hope you two have a long happy life together! hf

Re: New puppy :|
Hi OP, I recently had sort of the same problem. We have a little dog, too that is a puppy. I've noticed they go through phases, we had her going on the paper, then outside. But because of praising her so much when we were housebreaking her, she came to associate taking a shit with something that made us very happy. When I or my wife would leave, we noticed she would go to the front door and cry for a few minutes, then take a shit...I think hoping that her gift would make us happy and that we would come back.

Make sure she knows immediately how unhappy you are that she shits in the seat, take her out of the truck, put her and the shit on the ground and make sure she understands the ground is the place to take a shit. Continue to talk to her for awhile in a way that makes her know you are a bit angry. (her or him, whatever).

good luck
