The Perseid Meteor Shover 2012

This is a great weekend for watching meteors--but that's not all. Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon are lining up in the pre-dawn sky right in the middle of the Perseid display. The conjunction of planets guarantees that you will see something beautiful even in the unlikely event that the shower fizzles. Sky maps: Aug. 11, 12, 13.

The Perseids are not the only meteors in the sky this weekend. The Northern and Southern Delta Aquarids (NDA and SDA) are also active. These showers, which are minor compared to the Perseids, spring from 96P/Machholz, a comet that some researchers suspect is a visitor from another star system.

August 10, 2012: On the nights of Aug. 11th through 13th, the best meteor shower of the year will fill pre-dawn skies with hundreds of shooting stars. And that's just for starters. The brightest planets in the solar system are lining up right in the middle of the display.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the nights around August 12th as Earth passes through a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle.

"We expect to see meteor rates as high as a hundred per hour," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "The Perseids always put on a good show."

Perseids can be seen any time after 10 to 11 pm. The best time to look, however, is during the dark hours immediately before dawn. Also, advises Cooke, avoid city lights if possible. Faint meteors are easily lost in the urban glare. A visit to the countryside will typically triple the number of meteors you see.

This year's display is extra-special because of the planets. Jupiter, Venus, and the crescent Moon are gathering together just as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak. The alignment occurs in the eastern sky before sunrise on the three mornings of highest meteor activity.

Private Asteroid Mission is for the Benefit of Humanity

The B612 Foundation announced in June of this year that it plans to launch the first privately funded deep space mission, a space telescope that will map the inner solar system’s asteroid population and chart their orbits over the next hundred years, with the goal of finding every potentially Earth-impacting object.

“This is a very practical — and necessary — project,” Rusty Schweickart, Chairman Emeritus of B612, and Apollo 9 astronaut told Universe Today. “It can be done, it is exciting and we are trying to get the world to recognize that this is a great investment in the future of humanity.”

Saw a few last night even though I live in the middle of a city and there was a bit of haze in the sky.
Really looking forward to tonight's show (if there no bloody clouds that is!).

what's that? did I miss something?

It has been overcast in my area the past few nights, after about 10 minutes I went in. Hope tonight is clearer, this is my favorite time of summer.

The main symbolism I see here is the perceived origin of the
meteor shower, the constellation Perseus, hence the term, "Perseid."


In Greek mythology, Perseus was a hero who destroyed a sea monster
at Joppa [now Tel Aviv] to rescue a princess.

Perseus married the princess and their son founded Persia [now Iran]
hence the origin of the name, Persia.


Some say the symbol of St George slaying the dragon originates with Perseus.

Like the St George image, the family seal of Cyrus the Great [who founded the Persian empire]
was a man on a horse spearing a [human] enemy being trampled underfoot.
