Anonymous Coward User ID: 18131651 United States 09/05/2012 01:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Anybody know if there are any reports of fissure eruptions anywhere near the area? If you live from Costa Rica to El Salvador, this could be a problem. While this quake has not produced wide spread damage it is a thrusting or subduction type quake. To explain, the Cocos plate is pushing in a North Eastern fashion toward Central America. The rub comes in where the Caribbean Plate is also competing for space in the region, thus the Cocos plate is force down and below the Central American countries and below the Caribbean plate. While this is the strongest quake to strike the region in the past 40 years, it is interesting for zero aftershocks not to have happened. The El Salvador and the Costa Rican quakes remind me of the activity that took place prior to the Chile quake in 1960 where a 9.5 struck the region. We can only hope this doesn't happen. There should not be any effect on the plate structures North of this region so, Mexico and Western North America will be fine. |

In the end it doesn't even matter... |
