Wrong - it's not a "once in a lifetime" event and Shoemaker-Levy 9 was not the last.

From the duration of the flash and no debris cloud showing up this event is comparable to the June 2010 impact. And that was a 10 - 13 meter asteroid.

A 10 - 13 meter asteroid would trigger an extinction event? It just would burn up in Earth atmosphere.

Please do some research the next time before you post such a bullshit.

Before shoemaker-levy 9, amateur video astronomy did not exist in its current form, thus any visual report of a momentary flash could not be confirmed by video as it currently is. Indeed, prior to S-L 9, Voyager 1 detected a small impact flash on Jupiter.

It wasn't until the modern era of video amateur astronomy that these events could be regularly recorded and confirmed.

We're not "entering the spiral." In fact, we're above the galactic plane and headed away from it at the moment.

SL 9 was far larger and more energetic than these smaller more frequent impacts. The first modern impact flash detected by Anthony Wesley a couple of years ago was from an impactor only about 8-13 meters in size.

"The fact that such events have now been reported before may be a catalyst for visual observers to keep watch for them."

Monday's Jupiter impact was the fourth report of objects striking Jupiter since July 2009, when amateur astronomers spotted a bruise the size of the Pacific Ocean in the planet's cloud tops after an apparent asteroid strike on the planet.

"The speed of modern communications also helps, and word of the impact spread around the internet with great rapidity," Lawrence said. "For those with a camera, the lure of imaging Jupiter just became that little bit more exciting!"
