Britain cuts 10% of frontline cops
Almost 6,800 police posts have been downsized since the 2010 UK general election as a result of British austerity measures, according to a House of Commons analysis of updated Home Office figures.

The statistics show an average 6% reduction in frontline policing across England and Wales. The biggest came in Warwickshire (16%) and Nottinghamshire (13%). But the ultimate goal of cutting spending by 20 per cent, as required by the government, has been reached by only two out of the 43.

Shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, who commissioned the investigation has said that cuts place the “police and crime commissioners … in an impossible position. Six thousand eight hundred frontline officers have gone in two years compared to the 5,800 that Her Majesty's Inspectorate predicted would be lost over five years. Given the concern over community safety it is no wonder the government is looking for someone else to blame", cites the Guardian.

Cooper also attacked the government for blowing £100 million on the first police and crime commissioner elections in November, instead of channeling that money to save police jobs amid predictions of a very low voter turnout in the polls.

This sends the wrong message to the citizens..The social entitlements continue but protection shrinks. I guess if the police need help they will just call in the military..

Re: Britain cuts 10% of frontline cops
how timely, because 3 days in a row here (in a nice suburb of london) i noticed coppers on the beat in 2s

i see coppers on the beat all the time. there actually seem to be more out there than ever, which was apparently one of the aims of the coalition when it came in to office

perhaps thats actually happening. fewer cops on their fat arses in offices filling out paperwork and attending awareness groups

perhaps they are patrolling the nicer parts of town coz the locals are more likely to complain if there were no coppers about, and also less likely to rob and riot

incidentally, 2 pairs were women of about 5'5". i felt so reassured thumbs

and one of those pairs wasnt even stood to attention, they were both leaning against pavement railings staring at the traffic on the junction (where i was at a red light)

i thought 'what are YOU doing? stand the fuck up and at least try and look respectable and busy'

see, i am what you would call a model citizen when it comes to staying on the right side of the law, and yet i have very little respect for the police

they retire at 45-50 and then go work fulltime doing something else on a full police pension

so, less coppers is a good thing

My town is pretty quiet, but even it gets rowdy at weekends with out of towners . I've always loved seeing bobbies on the beat. I like knowing them by name. Where I lived before was a shithole, the local police station in my area of town was unmanned and abandoned due to graffiti and vandalism. People would throw bricks through the windows and then burn the place.

Corporatisation of the public sector. This is happening globally, and everything the Coporates touch turns to shit for the people on the ground.

Why do people allow what they've paid for with their taxes to be pawned off to criminals who get these 'services/investments' almost risk free. The Corporates know that these 'services' to the people are expenses/costs on the balance sheet, and how do you take an expense and turn it into profit - conservative management of that expense (Decrease output/the sevice and increase the Bullshit/PR). If the management of the service fails then it has to be bailed-out by the taxpayer as it's an essentail service...then the farce is resumed with new managers while the naughty old managers are retired off on million $ bonuses. This is Corporate Piracy. They are plundering public services and the people you vote for are their accomplices...

This is why public health care, education, policing, and on...are failing globally. There is a Pigs Heist of Biblical proporations going on right under the noses of the sheep..They're all in on it.

are you a policeman?

i have actually had occasion to need police assistance in the past more than once. my car was stolen. first off, they fingerprinted me, and sat on their arses. fortunately for me, 2 weeks later a member of the public called them and said she suspected a neighbour had a stolen car (he was known to the police)

did they wait for him to show up and then swoop? no, they just came and towed the car back to the station. no arrests were made, no investigation undertaken

so, that member of the public found my car. the police essentially just took credit for it, marking it down no doubt as 'solved'. they wouldnt even let us thank the good samaritan

my prints are no doubt still on file

on another occasion i had my bag snatched off my arm in central london. 2 guys gave chase but the culprits immediately vanished around a corner and down a side street probably. they came back to see if i was ok

eventually 2 (very unfit policemen) showed up and asked me to accompany them to the station to make a statement. i said, i didnt see the men well enough to make any kind of useful description and besides, he was long gone. the policemen werent having that and begin to kind of insist i make a statement

as i was already late for an appointment, i said i would think about it and deal with it when i got back home later that day. very fortunately for me i still had possession of my travel card as i had put it in my pocket

while i was being delayed by one of the cops, the 2 good samaritans who gave chase were being pressured to take a trip to the station, again to make a statement. neither of them wanted to/had the time

in the end, the police took the details of all 2 of us, advising us that we should think seriously about visiting our local police stations asap

they took OUR details when none of us were interested in making a statement

great isnt it? YOURE the victim, or YOU help a fellow citizen, and yet its YOU who gets delayed and hassled

yes, we need a police force, but it needs to be a better one than the version we have now

they dont even want to take regular fitness tests

used to be that you had to be a 6 footer if you wanted to join the force. now i see male coppers not much bigger than me at 5'3"

i dont think the police have ever been so incompetent and yet at the same time, overbearing. and dont get me started on the whole political correctness shit

they regularly put peoples lives at risk/kill with high speed driving (i see that alot around here)

really, i have little respect for them, regardless of whether i will ever need their assistance one day

Re: Britain cuts 10% of frontline cops
My other halfs dad owns a fruit farm. Yesterday while picking apples the noticed half the field only had very small apples. After speaking to a neighbour it turns out a van was seen parked and some men in the field, obviously robbing the apples. They got about 40 boxes worth. The neighbour had the license plate, duck knows why they didn't contact the police there and then, or at least ring my bfs dad.

The police were called and said there was nothing they can do due to lack of evidence. My bfs dad said he might have to go hunting on his land, and if he sees anyone he might just have to fire over their heads lol. The police warned him against doing that.

Back in the day the police would have found the identity of the van owner, got a pic of them, and went round the local grocers with it asking if the person had sold them a load of apples recently. Now, it seems, their hands are tied, and they have bigger fish to fry. They don't have time to spend on the little things, but they still have to fill out dozens of forms for the tiniest things.

Less police will make that worse, not better. The police need to be free from time constraints and red tape , so they can do some proper policing.

To the poster who had their bag snatched but couldn't give a description and couldn't be bothered to make a statement - watch out, because once the private company takes over the policing, you may find yourself charged with timewasting. Those peoples wages will rely on arrests and results.

Bring back local bobbies, men you could respect and rely on to do the right thing.

It's not even about fear. Now that my local station has had its opening hours slashed, I have to phone an 0845 number to get through to anybody, and be put on hold (its not free from mobiles, which is my only contact) and the nearest station is over 15 miles of country road away. There are only police around Fri and sat evenings.

Where I lived before anybody who wanted to commit a crime did it on sat when the local football team was playing, because there were only 2 cars and only 4 staff at the station, all other staff were needed in town for the game.

How would more cuts help that?

Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony
Of the slaves who wrestle to be free-
'But why were all the poets dumb?'
-William Montgomerie

So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

Wait till you cannot even walk on that street due to crime..

are you a policeman?

i have actually had occasion to need police assistance in the past more than once. my car was stolen. first off, they fingerprinted me, and sat on their arses. fortunately for me, 2 weeks later a member of the public called them and said she suspected a neighbour had a stolen car (he was known to the police)

did they wait for him to show up and then swoop? no, they just came and towed the car back to the station. no arrests were made, no investigation undertaken

so, that member of the public found my car. the police essentially just took credit for it, marking it down no doubt as 'solved'. they wouldnt even let us thank the good samaritan

my prints are no doubt still on file

on another occasion i had my bag snatched off my arm in central london.
