The odor occurrence is far too pervasive, widespread, and simultaneous to be, for instance, dairy farms, sewage treatment plants or broken sewer mains (which have also been hypothesized as possible sources -- poor cows just can't catch a break -- they're always getting blamed for our bad air!). Over the past day, I've skimmed through around 50 mainstream media articles on this phenomenon, and NOT ONE has mentioned the earthquake or volcano connection to sulphurous emissions. Not one. The alternative media, on the other hand, is all over the sulphur-as-an-earthquake-precursor angle. I guess going live on mainstream media with news about a possible earthquake precursor would be bad for business in SoCal. Better just to shrug it off as a rotten egg smell that got lifted up from some rotting fish in a freak storm and then blown hundreds of miles in ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS AT THE SAME TIME. That must have been some freak storm, to have completely violated laws of physics as well as meteorological models and common sense. |

In the dream I was at my grandmother's house in Westminster, Ca. She and several other family members were in the house even though many of them have been dead for years. Anyway, I was in the back bedroom and suddenly the house began to shake. I yelled out from the bedroom and could only hear screams. The shaking got more and more violent until the room I was in completely fell down around me. I managed to escape though to the living room where my family members were in a state of shock. Then, the house began to slide as if it were floating on water...we just floated around the backyard until we came to a violent stop. It was then that I woke up. I've never had an earthquake dream before or since, so it could have just been a dream. It was most intense perhaps a hundred kilometers north of San Francisco. We will here list some excerpts from the numerous reports, all indicating violent gas emission from the ground, gases that contained the poisonous hydrogen sulphide and gases that were frequently flammable. It is the earthquake for with the most detailed reports exist, and which shows every type of phenomenon that we have noted in other cases. (a) Effects in Air An extensive list of noises heard at the time of the shock, compiled from witnesses by Lawson and others (1908), includes the following: From Santa Rosa, "Heard noises in SW; then felt breeze; then felt shock". From Cotati, "Sound as of a strong wind before the shock". From Point Reyes Station, "Heard roar, then felt wind on my face". From Calistoga, "A rushing noise before the shock came". From Pescadero, "Noise as of wind preceded the shock". And from Mount Hamilton, "Sound as of flight of birds simultaneously with shock". Other clear evidence for gas is given by a report published on 23 April in the Santa Rosa Democrat-Republican (the first newspaper to appear after the devastation). It said: J.B. Doda, who came over from Fort Ross on Monday, reports that the earthquake caused immense cracks in the earth there, from which strong gases are emitted which make men and cattle sick. Also, according to Edgar Larkin (1906), who collected a great many accounts, the odour of hydrogen sulphide was noted in the area of Sausalito. He also reported that sulfurous odors were pungent in Napa County during the night of the 17th and 18th before the upheaval, and lasted all day. . . . From many of the letters it is clear that the entire region north and east of San Francisco is saturated with gases of sulfur origin. . . . In Santa Rosa, according to Lawson and others (1908), a strong smell of sulphur had been noticed two days before the earthquake by one Charles Kobes. Since during an earthquake eight years previously, "sulfur fumes came up from under his house which almost drove his family from home", the recurrence of this phenomenon on 16 April 1906 caused Kobes to tell his family that there would be another earthquake...." etc... |

According to Larkin (1906), "creeks became milky in several places as if gas escaped from the water". Hydrogen sulfide bubbling through water is known to give it a milky appearance. Another report in the San Jose Herald of 2 May 1906 states that in Monterey Bay, on the day of the quake, there were thousands of strange fish floating on the water a few miles offshore, none of which were known to old fishermen on the boat. Similar reports of massive fish kills at times of earthquakes, especially of bottom-dwelling fish, are known from Japan, in some cases also associated with the description of milkiness of the water. Again, hydrogen sulphide, which is highly toxic to fish, seems a likely explanation, and in each case it is bottom dwelling fish which are not normally caught that are the chief victims.... |

Yes, thanks for posting that here. I read that earlier on another thread, and it struck me that sulphur-smell-as-an-earthquake-precursor must be part of the local folklore in California, not just specialized knowledge for conspiracy types or those working in a particular scientific field. Same goes for the New Madrid area, as well as other countries like Japan and New Zealand. Someone mentioned on one of the threads that the smell of sulphur was very strong both before and after the Christchurch, New Zealand, earthquake a few years ago. I just hope and pray that people trust their gut instinct rather than their mainstream news reporters, because clearly SoCal residents are being lied to en masse about the origin and implications of the sulphur smell. If this phenomenon is part of the 'earthquake culture' folklore in California, then more people will heed the warnings rather than the mainstream lies. That's my hope, anyway. |

Know how to shut off gas, water and electricity to your home. Have flashlight, sturdy shoes beside bed. Secure water heaters. Many homes are lost in fires after an earthquake due to "dancing" water tanks that go wobbly and pull the gas connection loose. Put china dishes and other keepsakes out of china cabinets and pack securely. Wire bookcases and other heavy furniture that could fall over with eye-bolts into studs. Have bottled water, a manual can opener, propane stove, canned goods, get cash from ATM, non-perishable foods like crackers, peanut butter, beans, etc. Fill car with gas. Praying that a big earthquake will not happen, but from these signs looks like one is imminent. |
