Malware PRELOADED on computers built and shipped from CHINA.
I knew the US government had become aware of preloaded spyware being installed on government computers built and shipped from China. Looks like they haven't nipped it in the bud yet, and in fact, it's spreading to consumer machines.

"We found malware capable of remotely turning on an infected computer’s microphone and video camera, potentially giving a cybercriminal eyes and ears into a victim’s home or business. Additionally, we found malware that records a person’s every key stroke, allowing cybercriminals to steal a victim’s personal information," said Richard Domingues Boscovich, assistant general counsel of Microsoft's digital crimes unit, in the blog post.

I built all my computers with the exception of my laptop and it's 5 years old. I use FreeBSD as an OS on them all and don't have a mic or cam on any of them.

I bought a USB tv tuner from china off ebay. A month or so later my paypal account was hacked. When I ran snoop software which detects programs hijaking your computer it reported that the software that came with the USB tv tuner was trying to access my keyboard. I determined that the keylogger was pre-loaded onto the usb stick. That's pretty clever. It gets distributed all around the world straight from ebay. Who knows at what point of manufacture it gets loaded on.

bsflag its accesses your keyboard for quick keys to control the device in the USB how else do you expect to be able to change volume and channel? Only if this was allowed internet access could it be sending anyone anything anyway.
You should have a software firewall just in case and block almost everything until you need to use it.
And also have a physical hardware firewall as well.

I doubt it matters whether there's a cam or not. The malware can grab your personal info and send it back for hacking of your accounts. They're not going to be interested in spying on domestics but if they could get the pc's into military, government or otherwise secretive organisations then the eyes and ears function would be useful.

So what! You can do this with Adobe macromedia flash and a UPnP router and doing DNS spoofing. Nothing new here. Time to switch to Ubuntu.

This will not neccessarily help you. Sometimes, the chinese have been known to add a chip to a circuit board (HARDWARE) which can do the spying. So wiping and re-installing is not going to help. It's WAY DEEPER than that.

I keep tape over my built-in cam.

If you've got an old PC sitting around gathering dust you can put it to use as a hardware firewall by loading pfSense on it. It's free, based on FreeBSD, and is easy to set up, configure, and run.

With the ipBlock app you can block all incoming or outgoing traffic to any country on the globe.

HP are the worst with preloaded bloatware. No doubt some form of malware is installed

bought a HP notbooke last year. Ran like a dog, even with top specs. Wiped the drive with DOD 3 wipe process..installed win 7 fresh alongside fedora.

ran like a sprinted horse

if you buy a pre built computer, laptop, netbook, etc...do yourself a favor and learn how to install an OS, it's simple.

article says government computers...
Why does our government use any computer built in another country? Isn't that just asking for trouble considering right now China is sided with Russia against our policies
Correct me if I'm wrong..but is this not a pertinent questions

Assuming you're running Windows, download and run MalwareBytes and see if that gets rid if it.

You shouldn't run with Scripting enabled globally, which is probably how you got it in the first place. If you're not already, start using Firefox with the NoScript extension and only allow scripting on sites that you trust that won't work without it.

and run anti-virus....

open terminal/cmd prompt check for tcp connections, on windows netstat -ano will show you the pid with all the connections, you can open task manager change view to show with pid, track the pid that was connected and see exactly what program is doing the business, if you have your browser open you will most likely have tones of connections
