It's not me, but I made a woman whose workstation was visible from the sidewalk uncomfortable. I simply liked to see her when I walked by because she looked like my first wife. I never slowed my pace. Mostly, she was looking down at her work. One time, she looked up and smiled. On subsequent walks, I thought that she was evading me by averting her gaze as I walked by. One time, I saw her looking back at me from the rear of the store.

Finally, she confronted me with a steady, fixed stare. There was no hate in her eyes, but there was no love either. I interpreted this to be her signal that my looking in her direction annoyed her.

For twelve days, I felt sick about causing her distress. While I thought of things to say to her, I realized that everything that I could imagine would confirm to her my chronic creepiness at the least and win me a cease and desist order at worse.

I now walk to avoid the store. I'll walk past again—someday, but I'll not look inside. There's nothing for me there that will ever be glad to see me.

Yes, part of my sadness is reliving my separation over. I know I take it harder than I should, but it's my style to pick at the emotional scabs and make them bleed.
