If you are into being scared and helpless then this isn't for you. If you are preparing then do not forget to get out and train with your gear.

Too many people espcially the newer ones just collect stuff, this is not going to help you. You need to get out and know how to use these tools and skills.

And to the idiot that keeps leaving me red karma and calling me a "fucker" I do not care, you really are pathetic. Thanks to all the people who watch and enjoy my videos. Thanks to GLP for being such a great place.

Love the dutch oven. One of those and a wok and
I can cook anything I want to on an open fire or campstove.. including biscuits or bread.
If I had to choose only one item to cook with it would be the wok, 'tho. Very versatile. Bake, boil, steam, saute, fry, deep fry or stir fry..
Hell.. you can even wash yourself up and do the dishes with it.

Another awesome video. Cast iron is wonderful. The more it's used, the better it gets. But, the older you get, the heavier it gets. LOL.

You can even bake bread in one. Makes the best stews, roasts, and not much smells better than a pot of bean soup with a ham hock in it simmering on the wood stove in winter.

Really important to season it before use, unless you buy pre
seasoned. I usually only cook bacon and greasy things in a new one til it gets broken in and not use tomato or acid foods right away. Whether or not it makes a difference I don't know, but mine never sticks.

Wouldn't want to carry it cross country, but staying in one place, it can't be beat.

Wow, 10 children. You are very blessed, and probably very busy too! LOL. Your home sounds wonderful. Gary Mule had a beautiful fire pit too.

You might also be interested in hay box cooking. Nothing better than cast iron to use for it. In short, you heat your food, bury it in a box of hay and it slow cooks, like a slow cooker or crock pot. Here's a link to how to make and do it:

How wonderful! It sounds like a great community. Those foods will come in real handy, probably sooner than we'd like to think.

I was thinking how fortunate you are. Now I realize the children are doubly fortunate. Children are too important to let someone else teach them and be with them for more hours a day than the parent. May you and your family be richly blessed...just like you now are. hf

Re: Using your Prepping stuff, CAST IRON Dutch Oven
i could not watch the vid due to conection but you are right
people need to get out and use their gear for many reasons
lifespan of the item is one good reason i purchased many good stainless pots when i moved off grid and they were great but continued use over an open fire or being left
out in the cold with water in them has pretty much destroyed them.

so two thumbs up 5 stars and a bump for cast iron cook
gear it may weigh a ton but it should last about forever
even with use over a open fire.

TJ!! Good to see you again. It is a neat thing, isn't it? Haven't used it much, but did try it and it worked. Think if it were going to be used in winter, it would be inside. Not much can keep warm in winter outside.

'Bout as ready as I can be and know you are always ready! LOL! Hope the kids are well, and am happy to see you again. Take care, TJ and stay safe.

Dutch oven? So when civil unrest occurs, we should fart under the covers, then push our partner's head under the covers and force them to smell it? ;)

You're probably talking to brother Gary, but since you quoted sister Nine's, I'll answer til he shows up and corrects me. LOL.

If it were me, I'd use a tripod. Many of them you buy are pretty flimsy, but it wouldn't be hard to rig something sturdy up to hold the pots. They used to have things that I forget the name of, that came out the side of the fireplace to hold pots. So, short answer, yes, you can.

They also make a nice pot and lid lifter so you don't have to use a glove or take a chance on being burned.....if you're strong enough to hoist the pot. The lid lifter is awesome though, for checking how your food is doing. 8)

Cool video

South Africans have been making food using the Dutch oven for centuries. We call it "potjiekos" (potfood) and it is part of our traditional food.

Use these recipes and people will think you are a food god.

A pork and wine pot

Beef

Lamb pot

Coke and Beef pot

Chicken curry

Bulaga pot

Top potjiekos tip:
Never stir once you add the veggies. Let them steam.
