Google unveils first-ever underwater “street-view” (and it’s amazing)
Take that, Apple Maps.

Google just unveiled underwater “street views” of the world’s most popular undersea destinations: the Great Barrier Reef, Hawaii’s Hanauma Bay, and Apo Island in the Philippines. And the amazing views are available in glorious 1080P high-definition.
To get the images, Google partnered with the Caitlin Seaview Survey, which used a specialized SVII camera to capture the images. Every three seconds while traveling at about 2.5 miles/hour, the camera captures a 360-degree panorama with geolocation information and a compass heading. Only two of the cameras are in existence worldwide.

Without a doubt, it's fun to sit at your computer and "take trips" to places that we can access with new technology, but somehow I get the slight sinking feeling that this is conditioning us to stay just right where we are, in front of our screens without ever venturing out. All of our desires for travel and exploration are being met with a click, and it is slowly sucking us into a "virtual" world where one never needs to leave his home.

Also on the way is a whole lineup of virtual reality helmets and goggles offering 360 viewing and even mimicking smells and sensations of places like a carribbean beach.

Google earth and sky and sea is fun, but I prefer the real thing.

I tend to disagree, by looking at these things it makes me want to go there more and see it in person.

I want to travel the world for 10 years or so. I want to live in different countries to learn about different cultures, countries' histories, and just people in general. It's a nice thought, but it really doesn't work that way. You could travel long term if you were independently wealthy and planned your route carefully, but you can't. Google Street View has done a lot of good, I am now setting sail for my dream.

Wow that is cool.

I agree with the Apple maps. It sucks big time.

You are italian? Where are you going on holidays? I've been to many beach side destinations but never has my jaw dropped like it did when I stepped off the boat at Cala Luna beach on the east coast of Sardinia.
