Several thousand Syrian rebels on Thursday afternoon launched what they said would be a decisive battle for control of the strategic northern city of Aleppo.

"Tonight, Aleppo will be ours or we will be defeated," Abu Furat, a rebel commander, told AFP.

FSA Creates Their Own No-Fly Zone

Syria’s antigovernment fighters have succeeded in laying siege to the heavily fortified Abu ad Duhur air base.

They have downed at least two of the base’s MIG attack jets. And this month they have realized results few would have thought possible.

Having seized ground near the base’s western edge, from where they can fire onto two runways, they have forced the Syrian air force to cease flights to and from this place.

A Saudi was among 28 people killed in the Aleppo area on Tuesday, according to the opposition Aleppo News Network.

The website named him as Abdul Kareem al-Zaid Abu Saif. It said he went to Aleppo 25 days ago and was killed during clashes there.

Activists say Syrian troops and rebels are fighting some of the fiercest battles in the northern city of Aleppo.

The clashes Friday are part of a new push by the rebels to drive regime forces out of Syria's largest city and commercial capital.

ALEPPO: Fighting on an "unprecedented" scale on Friday shook Syria's second city Aleppo, where rebels have declared a decisive battle, residents and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

"The fighting is unprecedented and has not stopped since Thursday. The clashes used to be limited to one or two blocks of a district, but now the fighting is on several fronts," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

Residents in the central districts of Sulimaniyeh and Sayyid Ali, previously spared the worst of fighting, also told AFP that the violence and mortar fire from rebels was "unprecedented".

"The sound from the fighting and the gunfire has been non-stop. Everyone is terrified. I have never heard anything like this before," said a 30-year-old resident of Sulimaniyeh who only identified himself as Ziad.

I've read many stories that suggest the rebels are dying in droves...

The Guardian had a story about international Jihadis last week - 20 Chechens came to fight .... They were experienced fighters. Within a week, 5 had died. The rest just left one night.....

It was the old Eric Cartman - "screw you guys I'm going home..."

There are a number of MSM stories written with the goal of getting the West involved.....

With fighting on as many as 14 fronts, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) were heavily stretched against a Government side with heavy weapons and air support.

One FSA unit was reported surrounded, though other units had made advances in some districts.

An anonymous fighter reports:

“We reached the middle of Suleiman al-Halabi and liberated some neighborhoods so I am still optimistic.

But I’m worried about our organization. We can’t force the regime out.

At best, I think we can advance some of our positions”.
