The author might have gotten the idea of the Ta'veren, from the Lamed Vavniks of Jewish lore.
Lamed Vav are the Hebrew letters for 36. According to legend, there must be 36 righteous men on the Earth at all times, otherwise the Elohim would grow bored with our world and it would cease to exist.
When a Lamed Vavnik realizes that he is one of the 36, he dies. Hopefully, another comes along to replace him.
