Last I recall reading, you have to consume your weight in pot to reach the lethal dose (LD50).

Don't think anyone can afford to have their dog die from consumption, so these accounts of dogs "dying" from ingestion are completely fake propaganda.

As for dogs dying from eating weed? Well, marijuana is non-toxic so I'd like to see someone explain that one. If it's just a case of dogs eating weed and doing dumb shit that gets them killed...well duh!, they're DOGS.

Even at that it's still hypocritical bullshit. A dog eating some weed is a victim of evil marijuana, but no one thinks twice about giving catnip to a cat? A drug is a drug is a drug, isn't it?

This is an old tactic anyways..in the absence of any of the terrible horrible things the gov't tells you that come along with smoking weed, they start dredging up any little thing they can find that casts a negative light on the herb. In the legalization movement we usually call this "grasping at straws".

Dogs may indeed die from other things found in cannabis laced treats, like chocolate and raisins. They may also get a bowel obstruction from eating too many fan leaves, a situation which may arise with any fibrous plant. Sadly, they could die from electrolyte imbalances brought on by over aggressive treatments by overly concerned vets, such as purges.

I personally know a dog who is receiving Rick Simpson oil (whole plant cannabis extract, looks like Marmite) for his vaccine related cancer. The little guy had already had his leg amputated and been through chemo and was in awful shape- when his owner learned there was no hope, he decided to try cannabis, having talked to other people that had used it successfully for their pets. The dog is still very much alive, two years later, is not stoned all the time, and can catch a Frisbee just as well as he could with four legs. The oil is administered mixed with peanut butter. The dog breed taking the oil is Jack Russell Terrier.

Of course, more research needs to be done before this is a first line treatment. As any dog owner knows, some breeds are more sensitive to effects of drugs than others. This guy tried it when there was nothing else left to try to save his dog-and it worked.

MJ is a plant, not a drug. Also, chocolate is bad for dogs... maybe we should ban that, too!

People have smoked in front of their pets LONG before medical marijuana. If this is true it probably means Monsanto already took over the industry.

Since my initial post I have spoken with the doggie ER vet here and would like to add an important footnote.

She said that pugs, and other breed with airway restrictions are always at risk when sedated (by anything) due to their inherit breathing difficulties.

If you have one of these susceptable dogs (you should've noticed if your dog is a breed which has trouble breathing normally) and they are sedated by anything (alcohol is a big killer of these kind of dogs, they drink left over beer, pass out and die)go to the vet. For cannabis, they need hydration and airway support. When they wake up, they are fine.

Do not let your pug, or other airway restricted dog, near intoxicants-its not funny to give them beer, it can kill them.

And don't leave an elderly pug near kids that will hotbox the poor thing:
