What happened in the 80's is the primary factor in what is happening now, massive debt, overreaching government interference in private affairs, none of it good.
At least in the 60's and early 70's it seemed young people understood who the real enemy of freedom was and were willing to stand up and challenge its authority.

Personally, I think they set up these mass protests to give a reason to expand govt control. After-all, they have all they need to justify NDAA or the patriot act.. or any other policy.. they just point to the examples and say "see what happens if we do not act!" And the money flows in...
