Anonymous Coward User ID: 25232899 United States 10/11/2012 08:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | my maiden last name. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23487446 I need someone who is knows about this kind of fraud to help. Greatly appreciated. I had the credit card company call me to see if it was me trying to open the account. They closed thee account lucky for me But to further protect myself ; what do I do? I contacted the 3 Major credit bureaus and did a fraud alert on my account What else should I do? anything? There are companies out there that can "lock" the credit accounts for a monthly fee. Is this good to sign up for or a waste of money? Anyone had experience with this?? It is a waste of money... visit Clark Howard and see how to freeze your credit yourself...it's easy and once frozen no-one can open credit in your name without the special code that only you and the credit bureaus know [link to www.clarkhoward.com] good luck |

If someone does call you for security, take a name and number and then use one of your trusted numbers on printed documentation to call them back. Ask them to place markers requesting extra caution is taken when dealing with someone stating they are you. I like to phone direct even though it does cost you money it may save you a fortune or bad credit in the future |

If you don't have any big transactions coming up such as buying real estate, and you do not expect to obtain any other new accounts that will require a credit inquiry, put a freeze on your credit. You have to do this with all 3 credit bureaus in order for it to take place on all 3. You can do this online or over the phone. The only problem with doing this is if you need to have a credit inquiry it takes 30 days to have it removed. The fraud alert that you placed on your credit is a great idea. I did this and I have been receiving monthly statements that tell me if there has been any questionable activity. Place this fraud alert with all 3 credit bureaus. CREDIT KARMA is the only TRUE free credit monitoring site. Good luck! Ignorance is bliss until reality bites you in the ass. I take care of the dead...always. |

My situation was a little different. While at a popular interstate restaurant, in daylight, someone smashed my window and stole my purse. I was only inside like 5 minuets, but that was all it took. Anyhow I got my credit cards and phone blocked withing minuets. Then I went to the DMV with police report in hand and explained the situation. At that point the clerk suggested the privacy block to keep anyone from getting further information on myself. Sounds like you did the correct things op. Now to track down how they found out your maiden name. Facebook maybe? A yearbook? Former friend? Stay on it until you learn the truth. Good luck. Do NOT pay a service a monthly fee, as it is not necessary. All three total will cost under $50.00 including the registered letters. This can be unblocked for a small fee when new credit is necessary. They give you a pin number. |

You can gather the best info on the matter by visiting your bank internet site. The safest cards / accounts are those protected by hardware authenticators, hardware password generators. Good luck. |

Watching the world User ID: 21685109 United States 10/11/2012 07:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For the OP. the websites state that a security freeze can be lifted in 15 min by going online. Transunion seems to be the easiest one to deal with and offers clear contact phone numbers. Equifax and Experian were not so easy to access. Equifax requires you to sign into their member center in order to see their contact numbers. Experian tries to get you to sign up for their $30.00 credit education plan just to have a simple question answered. Here is a link to some of the problems people have had. When I called, no one would answer and I just kept getting the same message. [link to www.contacthelp.com] I'm now done with my rant. Again, good luck. I would assume that they may call you, however if you give them your email address they will respond much quicker this way. Like I said, Transunion is the easiest to deal with. The other two-not so much. When you set up an account with them, you will receive emails that tell you what is going on. I receive emails from Transunion that alert me to sign in and view my account.
