not sure about Canada but usually different things run on different circuits.Check your fuses/or clipsal.(do you have them there ?lol)if somethings shorted out the wiring in the roof(water from leaky roof/rain)it can blow the globes and trip the fuse/clipsal.
usually your lights will be on one circuit
powerpoints on another
hotwater on another etcetc

Also, the ceiling fan kept going, just the light bulbs all pooched out. Weird. But I feel confident in saying that it has nothing to do with the sinkhole, aliens, or WW3.
