Hundreds of bird deaths sound alarm on problems in the Great Lakes
Volunteers and biologists walking the beaches of northwestern Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore the past few days have counted nearly 300 dead or dying loons and other fish-eating birds -- all victims of botulism that has scientists concerned about the changing ecology of the Great Lakes.

"This last couple days has been off the charts," said Dan Ray, a biologist in charge of a project monitoring the botulism among fish-eating birds at the park. "I'm sitting here looking at our graph and for the loons, this appears to be one of the worst seasons."

Strong southwest and northwest winds in recent weeks explain why the dead loons are coming ashore, possibly from many miles into Lake Michigan.

Avian botulism killing hundreds of loons

Biologists believe the birds are being killed by botulism. The disease has been blamed in the deaths of many shorebirds in the Great Lakes region, but officials say it is rare to see this many loons affected.

Special place in hell for people who kill or harm animals. This is probably some form of poisoning, or some other man-made problem. redface

Sorry, I'm not aware of the area... Have there been any natural events occurring in the area? Is it renowned for having dead creatures littered everywhere?

What do they/you think is causing it and what could it lead to (problemwise) in the future?

How sad that those birds and other wildlife are dying. My children are going to be inheriting a sterile piece of rock someday. Who knows if they'll even see a bird, a fish, a rabbit, dolphin, or a deer in real life as adults. The loon's cry sounds foreboding and sad. Maybe it's known the fate of it's species since the beginning of time. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Hundreds of bird deaths sound alarm on problems in the Great Lakes
We visited Sleeping Bear Dunes Lakeshore this summer. It was beautiful and I don't recall seeing anything dead--fish or birds--along the shore.

There have been bird die-offs in the past and it seems that they continue to blame it on botulism:

Avian botulism is a paralytic, often fatal disease of birds that results when they ingest toxin produced by the native Clostridium botulinum type E; an anaerobic bacterium found in nutrient-rich lake bottoms. The bacterium spores rest in the gills and digestive tracts of fish living in many North American lakes.
The spores can remain viable for years and are harmless until the correct environmental conditions prompt them to germinate. Type E botulism occurs only when the spores germinate and the bacteria multiply and produce toxin. Changes in the Great Lakes ecosystem have increased the growth of the botulism bacterium, which has led to an increase in birds poisoned by eating toxin-tainted fish or invertebrates.
