Gov. Cuomo says City faces 'massive housing problem' after Sandy - Find Warming Shelters plus links to many resources here
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday that the city faces a housing crisis similar in scale to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The homes of as many as 30,000 to 40,000 people were significantly damaged by Sandy, officials said at a news conference, and require long- and short-term housing. FEMA director Craig Fugate said 86,000 New York area households have already registered for federal disaster assistance, at a cost of $97 million.

“Our first concern is to make sure they have food water and security at the same time as we are working on more long term solutions,” Bloomberg said. “My recollection is numbers may have been similar in Katrina.”

Some of the city’s largest housing developments are going to be “out of commission for a very long time,” Bloomberg added.

Is that not why one gets house insurance? And is the insurance company not responsible for housing them until they complete the repairs? Well, mine is anyway.

Reeling From the Storm and Facing a New Danger: the Cold

With many residents left homeless after the devastation from last week’s storm, New York-area officials began focusing on Sunday on another weather-related factor that might make the problems even worse: colder weather that is moving into the region.

In New York, 30,000 to 40,000 people, mainly residents of public housing, will have to find new homes, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said at a news conference with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Sunday. Mr. Bloomberg compared it to the situation after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

“I don’t know that anybody has ever taken this number of people and found housing for them overnight,” the mayor said.

Many residents in New Jersey, on Long Island and in Connecticut face a similar problem.“This is going to be a massive, massive housing problem,” Mr. Cuomo said.

Temperatures throughout the region fell early Sunday into the 30s, and the National Weather Service issued a freeze watch on Sunday for parts of New Jersey, including the coast, where many residents remained without heat. Officials have urged them to head to shelters.

Most of the people I know back in NY are having to take relatives in. So many have lost their homes. My sister (in Gerritsen Beach) is still without electricity and lost her car and basement (furnace, air-con, etc.) so will not have heat for a while.

Is this not glaringly OBVIOUS?

I wonder just how long it took him to come to this conclusion?

Wouldn't it be apparent even before the storm hits?

Good grief!

I can't imagine what that must be like. The worst hardship I've had after a storm is no power for two days. It wasn't too bad as it happened in warmer weather. I did lose a whole refrigerator of food as I had just done my shopping the same day it happened.

We lived in Florida during the time of Hurricane Andrew--we evacuated, but Andrew ended up hitting the cities below us.

The devastation this storm left is hard to read about, especially in regards to the hardships people will be facing with the upcoming cold weather.

I would hope many nearby will open their homes, churches, whatever--to help until electricity is restored.

Of course, I will pray along with many others, for your sister and family, and all those who need help in finding a solution, quick.

Death toll in U.S. rises to 113 from Hurricane Sandy: 2.7 million, across 15 states, still without power

Posted on November 4, 2012

November 4, 2012 – NEW YORK – Life was returning to normal in parts of New York and New Jersey, five days after Hurricane Sandy hit, but other areas were dark and isolated, authorities said. About 2.7 million customers in 15 states and the District of Columbia were without power Saturday, with at least some facing perhaps another week before it is restored, CNN reported. The U.S. death toll from Hurricane Sandy rose Saturday, reaching 113, the Los Angeles Times reported, up from 97 Friday. The newspaper said 48 of the deaths were in New York, followed by New Jersey with 24, Pennsylvania 14, Maryland 11, West Virginia seven and Connecticut four, North Carolina two, Virginia two and New Hampshire one. Residents of many beach towns on the South Shore of Long Island were waiting for power to be restored, and even for some sign someone was in charge, The New York Times reported. Vikki Quinn’s house in Long Beach was flooded and her possessions were piled in the yard. “I just keep waiting for someone with a megaphone and a car to just tell us what to do,” she told the Times. “I’m lost.” President Barack Obama convened a meeting of top emergency officials in Washington, with Govs. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Andrew Cuomo of New York and Dannel Malloy of Connecticut joining by telephone. White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters members of the Cabinet reported on their meetings with local officials, first responders and citizens, and the president spoke individually during the meeting with the governors and local officials, asking whether there are “additional federal resources that could be brought to bear to meet some of the needs in their communities.” Earnest said the president also got a briefing from the National Weather Service on a storm forecast to reach the U.S. Northeast Wednesday. Forecasters said the system could come with high winds, substantial rainfall and perhaps cooler temperatures. Lights were back on Saturday in most of Manhattan. Subway trains began running between Manhattan and the Long Island boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens for the first time since the storm flooded the tunnels under the East River, the Times said. Cuomo said about 60 percent of those in New York who lost power had it back by Saturday. On Long Island, however, more than half of the 1.2 million homes and businesses affected by the storm were still in the dark. “We are getting through it,” Cuomo said at a news briefing. “The worst is behind us.” Gas remained in short supply. Cuomo said 8 million gallons had been delivered, with 28 million more expected from commercial sources and 12 million from the Defense Department. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and other top officials were to visit some of the worst-hit areas. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg Friday announced the opening of the first of several disaster assistance service centers that will provide information about applying for emergency social and economic benefits. All of the centers will be operated by the city’s Human Resources Administration in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and will be open seven days a week. As of Friday afternoon, more than 98,000 people in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut had registered for federal assistance and more than $40 million in aid has been approved, a statement by the Federal Emergency Management Agency said. New York City inspectors are posting color-coded placards on buildings and homes to warn people not to enter some buildings. –Equities [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Re: Gov. Cuomo says City faces 'massive housing problem' after Sandy - Find Warming Shelters plus links to many resources here
Those that do choose to remain in their homes without heat should:

Find a warm place to spend go several times a day. New York City has opened warming centers.

Cover all bare skin. Wear loose layers for warmth, wear gloves and a hat indoors.

Drink warm liquids throughout the day, but avoid excessive caffeine. hmm (that would be a hard one for me to do.)

Never use a gas stove or range, or a portable gas heater to heat your home. They emit carbon monoxide and can kill.

People should watch for signs of hypothermia and if they occur, seek a warm place and medical attention. Early signs of hypothermia include:

Confusion or sleepiness, slowed or slurred speech

Uncontrollable shivering or stiffness in the arms and legs

Poor control over body movements and slow reaction

If you suspect someone is suffering from excessive cold, take their body temperature. If it is below 96 degrees, call 911 immediately.

Financially, use Sandy as a warning

As I sit watching the second half of Hurricane Sandy pass by with rain and high winds, I am without power like most and remember all week the weather people saying that this could be "the perfect storm" and cause all sorts of mayhem.

Like most, I quietly prepared but hoped that this would be the usual over-cautious mood and that this would be a nonevent. As I write this there are reports that almost all of Monroe County is without power, the NYC subway system could be closed for up to a week and the only tunnel opened in New York is the Lincoln Tunnel. The rest are flooded. Parts of the boardwalk in New Jersey and Delaware have been destroyed also. Many have even lost their lives in this tragic storm.

Those who prepared for this storm by purchasing water, batteries and food will undoubtedly fare better during and after the storm. Those who listened to local authorities and evacuated low lying areas may have saved their lives. Anyone who went the extra mile and got a generator will see their own lives virtually unaffected while many suffer through a lack of electric power and food.

Let this storm be a lesson.

Many of the smartest economic experts have been predicting a "perfect storm" in our financial markets for some time.
